car license tag

Post new topic

cindyscruise

Ok planning on shipping my car.  Hopefully will have residency by then.  But I get so confused and the more I read the more confused I become.  I understand that we have to pick the car up in person but then we have to drive it to our house in Veron.  Do we get a license tag (plate) beforehand?  I don't want to get stopped on the way home.  What if we have submitted all the paperwork for residency but have not actually received final ok.  Can we apply for the drivers license and tag?  Thank you in advance.

You are going to pay  taxes and duty to bring that in if you are not already approved for residencia.

Once here you must pay for your plates etc and have insurance BEFORE driving it.

cindyscruise, I will presume you know the requirements for bringing a car to the country.  Having assumed that you can expect $7-8000 USD in total shipping fees taxes etc.  Not worth it in most cases.  Next, once you have received it from Aduanas, having paid all taxes, customs etc. it may have to have missing parts and or damage assessed before driving it.  Naturally, once Aduanas has completed their part, you will have to apply for registration, licence plates, insurance etc.  Shouldn't take more than a month or 3...

This is a really high level look and many people will have the exact details for you but before that you might want to re-think it...

Cheers

Thank you.  Sounds like more trouble than it is worth.

I did it... albeit in 2009.

My import fees were VERY low....like 20% of the normal.
Car must be less than 5 yrs old.... no liens....

I had no shipping issues ($4-4,500 back then)
A RoRo(?) fro MIA will be cheaper I expect (roll on - Roll off)

THe plates come later and your importer will help.

It is rarely worth the cost and the time and the hassle!

Each to his/her own

Mine went in the container with the furniture....
Whole 40ft box was $4500... PHL to Caucedo.

Car was about $2000 tax and the std $2000 placas

Well worth it.

2005 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (1ft longer)

still driving it locally -- 69K miles
excellent car for the country

Things have changed somewhat I understand.  And yes everyone has to decide what works for them!
