Same Expressions - Opposite Meaning

hahaha.. i just notice an icon here while making a post, specifically 
- it says i dont agree
In the place where i was raised, we nod our head (i mean you move your head up and down - i just dont know if u can nod your head from left to right! 
lol) which means i agree and if we don't we shake from left to right or vice versa(i guess it can be interchangeable 
). Then i remember my colleagues (indian) if they agreed they are doing the opposite they shake their heads from from left to right or sometimes going up 
while if they don't agree they nod. (i think i'm not sure about the latter).
any explanation? or trivia about this?
