Work Permit Questions

Hi all,

Am hoping someone can help me with some questions - I am currently on a 2 year work permit which will expire on 21st July 2019. I have tendered my notice to my employer last week and will be serving a 2 months notice period. My last working day is 15th July 2019.

1) Does this mean my work permit also expire on 15th July instead of 21st July?

2) Does this mean I will need to leave Malaysia on the 15th of July itself or is there a "buffer" period so I don't have to work and leave on the same day?

3) If a buffer period exists, is it automatic or how do I go about it?

4) For example, would I be allowed to leave Malaysia on 15th July and go somewhere like Thailand for a few days and then get back into Malaysia (I am an EU citizen and can enter Malaysia for up to 3 months without a visa) even though I am no longer on work permit? If needed, I can buy an onward plane ticket for a stay less than 3 months (e.g. fly out of Malaysia in August for example).

Thank you for any help,
Amy

Well, there is no buffer period that i know of. The date I would watch is what the visa says because thats what Immigration will look at when you pass through the gates to leave. I doubt anyone knows or cares what date you left employment, after all you could still be legally employed until the 21st but your boss gave you a few days vacation, true? If you want a buffer period, I guess you got a 5-day period (15-21) so use it to leave within that time. If you go out and return, then yes youd be a tourist as long as the govt lets you keep doing that and that door is closing.
