Payment methods in Tunisia

Post new topic

Priscilla

Hello everyone,

Once you’re settled in Tunisia, you will need to make some basic purchases, like groceries or pay bills. Hence, it is essential to know the payment methods available in your host country.

Which are the most common payment methods in Tunisia? Why would you prefer some forms over others?

Does the amount of money or the type of paid services (groceries, bills, rent, etc.) determine the choice of payment methods?

Are there any apps at your disposal which make the payment process easier in Tunisia?

Can certain foreign currencies be used to make payments?

Have your habits in terms of payment methods changed since moving to Tunisia?

Thanks for sharing your experience,

Priscilla

My experience living in Sousse, which may be different than Tunis, is that cash is the preferred method of payment with the rare exception of hotels and some grocery chains where credit cards can be used. However, even at those merchants, it's common that the prevalent hand-held processing machines don't work and I then pay in cash. This problem is so common that I've learned to carry adequate cash as the second payment option.

Currency exchange is best done at banks and I prefer to use my U.S. Dollar ATM card to withdrawal local currency.

I prefer to pay cash as most of the time the hand held processing machines don't work due to supposabely network problem.
