Hello everyone,

Once you’re settled in the United Arab Emirates, you will need to make some basic purchases, like groceries or pay bills. Hence, it is essential to know the payment methods available in your host country.

Which are the most common payment methods in the United Arab Emirates? Why would you prefer some forms over others?

Does the amount of money or the type of paid services (groceries, bills, rent, etc.) determine the choice of payment methods?

Are there any apps at your disposal which make the payment process easier in the United Arab Emirates?

Can certain foreign currencies be used to make payments?

Have your habits in terms of payment methods changed since moving to the United Arab Emirates?

Thanks for sharing your experience,

Priscilla

Hi this is a good and helpul topic.  Cash is the King of payment methods it is easy if you don't need credit cards of banks credit cards are mostly used in shopping and sometimes paying for bills and services but  they are unsafe if you pay a degree installment the university or institute know it's number and may steal more than the agreed amount also you may lose it then any person can exploit it however you have to pay little charges to the card the card is really a sallary in advance for you from the bank I myself not using cards or mobile payments or internet transfers due to the existance of hackers other methods are edirhams for official payments at ministries and departments my advice is  don't keep high amounts in your credit card only your need for few weeks finally you should not buy foreign currency as cash and keep it at your house hoping that the exchange rate in the future be your friend and in your interest open an account in the bank with foreign currency and watch exchange rate variations if the rate is in your interest the bank will sell the amount for you in a safe manner Adnan Mustafa DSc Finance

Good topic. Getting a credit card with high limits is very easy in the UAE. Unless we know how to use it wisely, we will be lost soon. Same goes with Debit card. We cannot track our spendsunless it says insufficient funds at a most critical time. Talking about which payment method suits me, I prefer going with Cash always. Reasons and benefits are enormous if day-to-day expense is handled in cash. Most important advantage is controlled/defined expense and downside would be penny loss in terms of lack of smaller denominations in shops.
