Hi all,

My wife and I are planning on moving to Portugal to see if the country offers as good of a lifestyle living there has it has done by travelling there.

We tend to stay 3mths a year under the 90 day tourist visa, remote working for our current employers here in London and try to ‘blend in’ with the local life as much as possible.

On our recent time there, we were told about the eligibility of a D7 visa, which seems like this would be the option to go for, however one of the requirements has me worried and was wondering if anyone can shed some light or has had experience.

The requirement says that we need to provide a place of residence to apply, however why and how could I commit to a years rent somewhere if I don’t know if I’ll be eligible for the D7?

Can anyone detail how one would manage this please?

Hello,
Thank for your question.
When Portuguese authorities request a residence it can obviously be a fixed permanent residence, but also one of two things (see what suits you best):

1. A letter of recommendation from someone you know and has a fixed residence in the Portugal stating that you'll live there. To this letter you should attach the person's ID card.

2. The address of the hotel or other accommodations' place where you're planning to stay and where you should stay at least 1 week. This is also valid because each touristic facility communicate to the local authorities who's staying, including police.

After you arrive and for legal formalities you should find a permanent residence.

Hope this helps.

That’s exactly the answer I was looking for, short, simple and explained perfectly; thank you!!

That explains why the lady we stayed with in Porto for a few month asked me to give her address to verify (which I misinterpreted as her assuming we’d be stopping with her for a year!)

Ok, onwards and upwards! Thanks

I don’t know if this would apply to you and maybe you know already but if you stay more than 183 days in Portugal in a rolling year you are supposed to pay tax on your earnings. There is quite a lot of info online. All the best. Portugal is beautiful...
