Information sources in English?

Post new topic

Hello all,

In the United States where I live and indeed in Canada where I was born, it is common place for government agencies to provide information in multiple languages to accommodate immigrants. I know Hungary is unlikely to be accommodating in this way, but wondered if any services like this are available in at least one or two other languages such as English. Especially given their drive to recruit citizens by ancestry, many of whom would speak only very rudimentary Hungarian.

As a Hungarian citizen who can speak not a single word of Hungarian (obtained because my father is from Budapest), I’ve always wondered how I can keep abreast of what’s going on in the country so I know if anything that’s important for me to know as a foreign residing citizen is coming down the pipe or has happened.

Any communications I have received, such as the invitation to vote in the European election, were in Hungarian only (understandably) and would’ve been very difficult for me to review.

Is anyone aware of government services and information being available in English anywhere?

Also what are the best news sources regarding Hungary that are available for people who speak only English? I am aware of HungaryToday.hu , but I’m wondering if there are any other similar sites I should review.

Thanks!

You can try Index.hu which has some output in English.  It's a fairly recent change.  The web site is of quality and produces fair reporting as far as I know.   The gallery feature is excellent.

There's also Hungary Around the Clock which has been going for years.  When I first worked in HU, we used to get printed copies on our desks every morning!  I think it might need a subscription for anything other than the summaries.

Thank you. Anything regarding government info in English or are their services  purely offered in Hungarian?

Contact the nearest Hungarian Embassy or consulate. They can advise you in English, especially about voting. If you are a Hungarian citizen, they are suppose to help you, regardless of your language skills.

Since you state to live in the USA, but not exactly where, then a generic source of Hungarian Consulates and Embassies may be found here:
