Hello everyone,

Homeschooling your children as an expat in Mauritius will definitely come with its load of challenges. Here is a special call to parents who are already homeschooling their children or who plan on doing so to share any information they might have.

Should you opt for homeschooling, is it legal in Mauritius ? Do you require to register your child or do you need any kind of permission / exemption from the authorities ?  If it is not legal, what alternative option/s do you have ?

How do you go about getting all the necessary educational resources (books, syllabus, notes etc…) to pursue your children’s education in Mauritius ? Does it depend on the curriculum ?

What do you add in your homeschooling techniques to help educate your child that might not be offered or available in traditional schooling ?

How do you socialise homeschooled children in Mauritius by providing them opportunities to interact with other children ?

If you have any interest in homeschooling, could you please share your views on the pros and cons ?

Thank you for sharing your experience,
Bhavna

Hi Bhavna,

Our children are home schooled via Wolsey Hall (Oxford UK based company). To answer some of your questions...
Yes it is legal.
It very much depends on their long term plans. We chose Wolsey Hall as we are from the UK originally and we wanted them to be in the UK system.
It also very much depends on the child. Ours are teenagers who have been in a normal school system until only recently; so they have already learned how to study and are also quite diligent. I'm not sure if it would have worked for us, without the 2 combinations.
Wolsey Hall provide everything via post and the studying, assessments are all on-line, with a tutor for each subject. The tutors are available via email, calls and/or sykpe/webchats to discuss any difficulties and to do regular feedback.
My kids are of a similar age, so they discuss subjects and help each other if one doesn't understand something.
Exams can be done in Mauritius or most other countries, if you move in the meantime.
We do have to work hard with socialising, but manage well with friends locally. We also add in a lot of physical activity in the week, so they get outdoors.
We found that when you take out school activities like, assemblies, PT, gaps in between lessons, etc they can actually spend more hours studying than before. The flexibility allows us to travel when we want and change days to fit in with family activities, etc It also worked out cheaper than the schools we looked at (not that this was a factor when we decided).
You do need a good internet service and I would suggest a proper area in the house to study. We are fortunate to have space where we have made into their study area. We didn't want them to study in bedrooms, etc.
Hope that helps
