At first i heard that you can only register an American car if it is 8 or 9 yrs old, but then i heard in San Miguel you can register a car of the current year. I have a 2019 car here and i only have 2 more weeks to register it before the year ends (offices close around 18th for xmas holidays). Please help!!! i just got here a few weeks ago and have been busy finding housing but now i am really in a crunch to get this done before year is out!
thanks,
Susan

Importing a vehicle into Mexico is done at the border by a licensed Mexican importer. NAFTA made vehicles 9 and 10 years old are allowed now and could cost anywhere from $1800.00 to $3000.00 USD or more. Then it could be registered in your state in Mexico. Otherwise it cannot get licence plates in Mexico.  Importers have more expensive ways to import a newer vehicle but might cost much more. They sell it to a Mexican auto dealer, then import it and then sell it back to the owner. There are injunctions "amparos" that are given by Mexican federal judges to import vehicles other than the 9 or 10 year old  vehicles from time to time to some importers for a limited time. All these imports are done at the border after they export the vehicle from the US.

Hi "dogs4susan", as confirmed by "alleycat", it's complicated to import a vehicle permanently to Mexico from a foreign country (USA, Canada, Europe), especially if recent model. If you have the permanent residency or Mexican citizenship status you couldn't go across the border with a TIP for the vehicle.

Here are a few articles on the subject, considering that a 2019 would/could also considered a new vehicle. These articles are in Spanish but since you leaved 20 yrs in Oaxaca this should not be a problem for you

Adios y buen dia a todos, GyC.
