Home decoration ideas for expats in Puerto Rico

Post new topic

Bhavna

Hello,

After moving to Puerto Rico, setting up home and turning your accommodation into your personal abode can be a great way to start off your new life and feel at home. We would like to know whether expats are keen on decorating and furnishing to warm up their space whether for the festive season or all year-round.

Upon renting a new apartment or house in Puerto Rico, do you redesign your accommodation to suit your taste? Are your choices influenced by price, climate, etc…?

Have you brought any interior decoration items from your home country or did you consider buying any once in Puerto Rico?

As an expat in Puerto Rico do you find it worthy to invest in home decor? Could you share what you have bought and perhaps some interesting places to shop for home decor?

How would you describe the local style of decoration? Have you picked up any item which reflects the local style?

Would you be inspired by the festive season to decorate and add a festive touch to your living space?

Thank you for sharing your experience,

Bhavna

I haven't seen a particular Caribbean theme here. There is not a great selection of furniture stores here and they are mostly branches of mainland chains.  One exception is Tartak which is on Rt 26 right next to the airport.

Many people ship from North Carolina.  Be sure to get solid wood. Particle board dissolves in the humidity.

There are some great places for accessories.  Alicia has a huge selection of dishweare6, linens, decorations etc.  We found a dozen really nice reproduction paintings to furnish a vacation rental we own for an average of $35 each.

I am loving Puerto Rico . I decided to go with land meets sea decor in my living room . The tile floors were already a beautiful sand color.  I painted the walls turquoise and all the accent trim iz white. Looks lovely

We made some tropical theme light shades from the large gourds from a calabash tree. The gourds are cut and cleaned out & dried.  I used a drill to creat marine images like fish, lobsters & shells etc.
The gourds are about 18”x 8”.    You just need to find a calabash tree and pick the gourds for free. 😎

The gourds are mostly used as plates in PR, some people paint decorative picture about PR inside and hang them on the wall or fill them with nuts and other items. Their name here is “Ditas”.
You can fit a lot of rice, beans, tostones and meat in one of them, it is customary on the country side (campo), a few restaurants use them also but they are fairly fragile and need replacement often.
