From whar I understand, entrance in to Cambodia will be a heck of a lot easier than getting into Thailand. Its my understanding that I can get my visa at the airport.....thats great!!! Can someone let me know if I can change the chip in my Iphone in oreder to make it work in Cambodia.

If I didnt introduce myself before, Im Richie from Long Island, New York. I spent 40 years as a union electrician. Id like to learn the language while Im here in Phnom Penh.

I would like to make contact with someone who can direct me to a hotel or directly to one of the apartments I saw in Phnom Penh. Ill be alone, so Id like make friends in the expat community so Im clear as to the customs in the neighborhood.

Hello grumpy52

Indeed you can get a visa on arrival, go for the E-type Ordinary visa for $35.

This is valid for one month and a week after you arrive you should apply for an extension of stay (EOS).

If you are 55 or over no problem to get the retirement extension (no docs required), if you are under 55 you need to supply proof of being retired and having regular and sufficient funds coming in.

If you want to work but have no job yet, you can apply for a 6 month EG (general) extension, no docs required.
If this expires you have to leave the country but can come back and do the same thing again.

So indeed easy peasy, certainly compared to Thailand and Vietnam.

At the airport exit are booths that sell sim cards for your phone.

Good luck.

Thaks so much for getting back to me.

Its been hard trying to figure where to live because this will probably be my last stop. The only problem is the tourists. Id love to have an aprtment near the beach but I'm afraid of the circus of tourists. If there is a place where the tourists dont go and is near a beach, please let me know. My second choice is a place called land of flowers (I may be wrong with the name). Id really like peace and quiet and being among nature. Im 67. I dont need all the hustle and bustle of night life. Id like to find a place where I can jump on a motor bike and go to the beach. I hope this doesnt sound like a lot. But its my dream. I hope you can help or direct me to the right people to talk to.
Thanx

Hey Richie..sounds like we have a bit in common...age (66), status, what we are looking for etc. Except for coming from opposite parts of the world..I plan to move to Cambo in about June and like you I think it will be my last stop. I worked in Asia (mainly Vietnam and Myanmar) for a few years and have visited Cambodia so I know a bit about the place.  My plan is to settle in Phnom Penh for the first year,  get a good motorbike,  maybe travel round a bit, see where I want to end up. Happy to keep in touch,  maybe have a beer or two in 6 months from now?

Beach,  flowers,  quiet surroundings you will find in Kept (Kampot).

But before choosing remotely,  come over and stay in PP for some months.
That way you can discover other parts of Cambodia and choose where you want to live.

Good luck.

I couldn’t believe your response. I feel the same way about accommodations. I too want to do Phnom Penh for the first year. I think it’s a right of passage. Like when you go to Thailand you have to hit Bangkok. I agree with the motorbike too. Are you into getting a place by yourself or would you like to share a nice 2 bedroom. I figure we can get something really special with the money we have. There are so many places in Phnom Penh. I was just looking. Have you looked at all? Where are you from? I’m originally from Long Island, New York and I’m temporarily living in Florida.

Joe!
You took the words right out of my mouth. I’m going to stay in PP for the first year. I just met another member who is coming to PP in June. Sounds like real nice guy. This is getting more exciting by the moment!!! Thank you for all your help!!!

Hi Richie - originally from the UK, been resident in New Zealand since 1979, worked in Saudi / Qatar / Bahrain / Myanmar / Vietnam, married twice, now single - sharing an apartment? A nice thought but I need my own space (after a total of 40 years married life). But keep in touch, and maybe use the Message function on our profile page. BTW when looking for an apartment try contacting this guy ***, he seems to know the scene pretty well.
All the best for your move, and looking forward to a catch up later next year.
Cheers
Dave

Hey grumpy52. Not sure if you have selected a place in PP yet. I’ve lived off and on in PP for over a year. I tend to travel around mostly. If you want to find nice place in PP I would suggest something around Russian  market area. Since I only come back every so often I get an airbnb but you can find reasonable guest houses. I enjoy the area around the Palace as well. Some nice restaurants and close enough to the riverside area if you want to go there. I don’t do motorbikes. I’m lazy and just use grab to hail tuk tuks to get around or primarily I walk which can be fun and challenging in PP. Kampot can be nice and I like Battambang too. Siem Reap is fun. Good luck with your relocation. Have fun in Cambodia. I usually do.
