My husband and I are moving to São Jose dos campos in April for a 2 year expat assignment. We are excited for the opportunity.  Is there an expat community is São Jose dos campos?

Thank you so much for the warm welcome!
My husband and I are looking for recommendations on areas to rent, churches to attend and I would like to take Portuguese courses when we move.  Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, plus any other tips!  Thank you so much!

See Diksha's  response.
You need to go to the Sao Paulo forum and post. You will get better help.

Hi! And welcome Joe!

Hey everyone! I’m a new member and I have been living in Natal, RN for almost 6 mo! I work at a private school and was so happy to be offered the job. I am married and brought my husband and son with me. We moved from Chile, which we were sad to leave, but ready for a new adventure! We plan to stay here for a couple of years before heading to Europe! I’m excited to meet everyone! Happy Carnaval !!!

lisarobinettdiaz

Nice to meet a fellow Texas here! I’m originally from Lubbock!

Texanbrazil

Welcome Lisa. Red Raider?
TT has sister schools in Brazil. One here in Foz. Was good to meet them and 6 Texan's in a high school English class made the student crazy with our Texan words.
Enjoy the beach.

Hi all ...
I just surfed onto your site .... my girlfriend and I were absolutely rolling on the floor with laughter about the description of the Federal Police and the RN applications ....
Ive been working on this on my own for about a year now ... Ive discovered a lot of solutions but turned up a lot of new problems ...
right now, we just bought a new motor scooter and now I have to figure out do I need insurance and how do I go about getting a motorcycle operators license or would it be easier for now to do that back in the states?
we are looking at a gorgeous piece of property to purchase, can turn it into a ranch and tourist venue for those adventurous enough to brave the trails of the Chapada Diamantina, could use help with the whole process ....moving money has proved especially challenging ....

but, heck, meantime we are having gobs of fun and Im so glad I found this site!

Hello Everyone,

I came to Brazil with my girlfriend some weeks ago, I must say the people we've met in our airbnb have been nice to us and those we meet whenever we go out do not make us feel odd cos I am black skin man from Nigeria but I do not feel awkward.

It's been a nice experience. We stay in Centro area in Sao Paulo. It's been had to meet English speakers as most people speaks Portuguese.

This site has all the information to get by in this city and I am happy to be here.

Welcome to Brazil -- enjoy your visit!   Sorry that it happened during this coronavirus scare.

You're in ground zero of COVID-19! Gotta be
careful. Keep checking your return flight to see if there's a cancellation. Check the news
home to make sure Nigeria allows international flights from Brazil!

Having said that, I hope you brought enough money or means to have more cash just in case you get stranded!

Thanks for welcoming me

@Robal

I already asked the airline to suspend our return tickets date as we won't risk flying at this time and I already made arrangements for extended stay in an Airbnb so we are fine for now.

Thank you

Texanbrazil

May want to go to the PF office to extend visa. More costly to overstay than airline tickets.

We came in February and we were stamped in for 90days,

Texanbrazil

90 days was based on your return tickets. With what is going on you may not have a choice to stay.
I also check your rental agreement. Some rentals have given notices to renters that they will not allow shelter in place in their properties here, and I would guess worse in SP.

GuestPoster204

You are at the height of the Coronavirus in Brazil between April and May. I'm sure Nigeria would suspend int'l flights from Brazil. I hope you have funds for an extended
stay....

. .

Texanbrazil

I agree. With many being asked to leave (some with no choice). Without health insurance, I would seriously think of shorting a trip.
As I posted in another post, US Embassy ask US tourist to consider returning home. BR can and may use military to enforce quarantine's
With possible rentals and hotels shutting down the last thing a medical quarantine in a camp setting.

P.S. Just read Nigeria is closing flights from many affected countries with 1000 or more cases on Friday.
BR has not really began testing and could climb above 1000 very quickly.

I'm in an Airbnb so I only have to extend my stay. My host have no problem.

I already decided to stay here cos the airport is the most risky place to visit in this time.

My girlfriend is also pregnant and I won't want to expose her. We will stay on, we've bought some food stuff to last us for a while.

Thanks for your concern

Texanbrazil

Take care.
No joke as to PF/Military enforcement. She can stay, but you may be the question.

Thank you, Texan!

Enjoy!

So I've been to the PF and they say visitors can stay on without worrying about the 90 days visa expiration till the stay home order is lifted. They only attend to emergency cases.

GuestPoster204

Yes. They did suspend all migratory expirations for foreigners last 16 March 2020. PF will restart countdown till further notice. Stay tuned.

Viajanete

Hi everyone -
I've been "lurking" here for several months and I enjoy seeing the variety of issues that come up and the helpful responses.  I've known for some time that I've wanted to live in Brazil, and things are starting to take shape. I plan to apply for a retiree visa with the plan being I'd actually move to Governador Valadares, MG sometime between March and June of 2021.  Why Valadares, you no doubt wonder?  Because I've been a regular visitor there since my high school exchange in 1965. 😊  I am still in touch with my old host family, and I have a small circle of other friends there as well. I'm at least somewhat familiar with the community, and my Portuguese is passable-plus (if I do say so myself).
So...as soon as the Chicago consulate opens again, I'll be collecting information on the documents I'll be needing.
I was planning to make a 3-week trip this past April, but it got cancelled. I still have the Azul credit to use before December.
What advice would you offer regarding things I might try to scope out / pre-arrange in, say, November in anticipation of a move that would take place 4 to 7 months later?
Thanks for your preliminary advice.

GuestPoster204

Welcome to the forum! I would say appliances but the voltage in Gov Valadares is 220. So, if you already know the paperworks involved and a prospect of a moving company
if you have furnitures to bring, just bring yourself in with you fluency in Portuguese and your relentless optimism of good things in Brazil! And scout the good area with less crime and close to conveniences like grocery stores etc. when you come...

Hello!

I'm a single mother living in New York City, considering moving (back) to Sao Paulo. I was raised in Sao Paulo for about 10 years of my teen years, and I speak Portuguese fluently.

I have been considering moving back to Sao Paulo to try to pursue education (doctorate level) and also be closer to the family (my dad, cousins, and stepmom) who are still in Sao Paulo. The "catch" is that I have two children now (ages 4 and 8) who do not speak Portuguese at all (well, a little, but very poorly).

I'm curious to find out what has been everyone's experience as expats have been, particularly those of you who have children.
