Cost of Living in Australia in 2020

Hi everyone,

Every year, we invite expats who are living in Australia to share their experience and tell us more about the average price of products and services in their town, city or area, so that we can help future expats planning to settle in Australia.
We would like to thank you in advance for your contribution.

Regarding accommodation, how much does it cost to rent or buy an apartment or a house in Australia?

How much do you pay on average for public transport (bus, subway, train, tram, taxi)?
How much does it cost to fill up your car's fuel tank?

Concerning your food expenses : how much do you pay for basic food items such as rice, bread, and pasta? What is the average price of your monthly food shopping?

How much does it cost to have health insurance? How much for a health specialist's consultation in Australia?

How much does childcare cost on average per month? What about school fees?

How much do you pay for electricity, gas, water, internet, mobile's subscription etc., per month?

How much do you spend on leisure in Australia (cinema, sport, etc)?

Feel free to add any other daily expenses that you have in mind.

Thank you for sharing,

Loïc

Here in Darwin, one would pay about $150 at the supermarket each week for a single person. Darwin experienced a boom period until 2016 and it has been a bust period ever since. House and apartment prices have come down by about 30%. Cost of a one-bedroom apartment would be around $250,000. Rent of the same apartment would be around $200 per week.  Cost of filling up with petrol is about $60. Buses are cheap here, about $3 per fare. One does not need health insurance here. Public hospitals are free and so are doctor's visits if one goes to a doctor who "bulk bills". For a combined land phone/internet account, one pays about $900 per years. Mobile phone bills cost additional. Darwin is a sports-mad town and sport is the principal leisure activity which costs little.
