Lombok is mostly Muslim, especially in the south.

I should also point out that in 2018/19 Lombok and some of it's nearby islands were hit by several strong earthquakes. So actually you need to be aware that certain parts of Indonesia do experience natural disasters like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and flooding.

Sammi Kamal

Oh you guys. Now I'm jealous...

It's like all I wanted coming 2gether

Sammi Kamal

Which part of Indonesia u based at?

Sammi Kamal

Yeah. I rather that then live with animalistic people. Not keen on tsunamis thought or volcano but deal with it when it happens

Sammi Kamal

Iz there any active volcanoes and if so how big does eruption get? Obviously not wanting 1 on island I'll be on

ladivo779

Probably the resulting tsunami would be far more catastrophic than the earthquake that causes it. In general, small islands are not a good place to be during tsunamis. In places where tsunamis occur you can go online and find details and maps of evacuation zones so that you know where to head to should a tsunami warning be issued. On a small island if there is no "high ground" or tall sturdy buildings to go to for protection then it could be disastrous. Personally I would much rather live near the beach with hills not too far away than on a small island here in Indonesia.

But where I live now is 2,500 feet above sea level - no floods in my area, only rare volcanic eruptions, minor earthquakes which are common in Indonesia and definitely no possibility of tsunamis.

Sammi Kamal

Hey you guys thanks for that info. Lots of help. Considering maybe to get place on higher ground, off the beach.

Your knowledge was key to thinking maybe higher ground on a bigger island but still an island. At the moment Lombok looks interesting. We don't want Robinson Crusoe style solitude.... still need some creature comforts plus education. It's still early days but visa might dictate ultimate location

Sammi Kamal

Visa will be employment related and that's the difficulty, we don't really wanna work hopefully wouldnt need to work.

F-ing visa

Do you travel to diff parts for fun or work? Do a lot of people holiday within Indo or is that the travel bug in u?

Really like the look of lombok but to be honest I think beaches and the coasts the the best part of any country. Lombok will seem to supply all that's needed, separation but not isolation, the schooling etc. Although the thought was to take a whole island, the thought of a tsunami is far worse. Not sure about the volcano though but with more then 5 million on the island and 96% muslim gives confidence

Thinking to stay in town on higher ground but have be close enough to the beach. Not bothered about inconsistent internet. Maybe destination will cage as I get to know the country. It's just this visa bastard doing my head in. Cant really look for a location without finding employment.

Can we not just retire to the country and not work? Coz wifey not keen to work

scouser59

you can retire if your 55 or older .

Sammi Kamal

I'm 42 now and wanting to move by time I'm 47... so that don't work😥

Firstly, Java island is huge. It is mostly only crowded in the big cities and towns. If you choose to live away from the cities and towns then it won't be crowded. And there are lots and lots of small towns and villages along the coastline.

Secondly, there will only be international schools where there are lots of foreigners or schools with an English speaking curriculum where there are relatively wealthy locals which tends to be in cities and towns. Why would there be an international school in a remote area? Also, there are different kinds of international school. There are the real ones with foreign teachers that are expensive and there are the "local ones" that use mostly local teachers using an English speaking curriculum such as Cambridge, and these are very affordable.

So finding a remote place to live with an international school is not necessarily going to be easy. If you accept home schooling as an option then it opens up all the remote places to you. That means you could also consider Sumatra island which is more than three times the size of Java or Kalimantan or Sulawesi etc.

Not too far from where I live is a place called Pangandaran. I've never been there but I heard there are quite a few expats that live there. I need to do more traveling to explore these kind of places.

However, I think the best way forward is to spend some time here traveling around to see if it will really suit you and that are the best areas. You can try to visit some schools when you visit here too. It may be that you may not opt for those remote places after looking around but perhaps a town with lots of farming on the outskirts.

You might want to consider setting up a business. It will make it much easier to get a KITAS (Temporary Stay Permit/Card) for you and members of your family and also make it possible for you to legally own land. If you do everything correctly it can even lead to Indonesia Citizenship if that is what you want.

ladivo779

And for non-Indonesia citizens, what might b the cost of setting up a business these days?

CallumRoxburgh

It varies but typically you are looking at about $3,000.

ladivo779

Hi Callum,

Wow $3,000 is a small amount to open up a company, and you say it means you can then get a KITAS for yourself and your family? But if it was that cheap and that easy then everyone would be moving to Indonesia or am I missing something?
