Starting in November, the electricity rate will begin to rise

https://listindiario.com/economia/2021/ … -electrica

Starting next month, the Government will begin to desmantle the subsidy to the electricity sector and this will translate into a gradual increase in the rate for users, officials from the Superintendency of Electricity (SIE) reported this Thursday morning.

This is part of a readjustment of the rate that will cover from November 2021 to December 2026.

This measure is part of the Implementation Plan of the New Tariff Regime contemplated in the electricity pact, the authorities explained.

With this, the Government seeks to reduce its expenses and it is done because the electricity rate has not changed in the country for more than ten years, as explained by the Superintendent of Electricity, Rafael Aníbal Velazco Espaillat.

Some bad medicine unfortuantely to start to put right years of disorganization and inefficiency in the electrical sector. One would expect the higher tariffs will be the affected at this time. Also do not forget DR is not immune to the global hike in oil and gas prices.

Information on price increases from Monday based on EDE:

How much will your home's electricity bill go up from Monday?

https://www.diariolibre.com/economia/cu … JM29616681

This coming Monday, November 1, the Dominican State begins the gradual dismantling of the electricity tariff subsidy, which will be adjusted upwards every three months until 2026, causing a gradual increase in the cost of the bill up to the actual price of the service.

But, how much will the user pay according to the new tariff readjustments and according to their energy consumption? Who will be the most affected by the start of the deforestation scheduled under the Electricity Pact?

The following table explains the increase that will be made, according to the range of consumption of each client, which goes from RD $ 25.27 to RD $ 79.38.

And that's the first increase!

I just read this article today about the government putting out tenders to supply another 800MW of electricity countrywide but using natural gas.

Government seeks to replicate Punta Catalina but on gas

https://www.elcaribe.com.do/panorama/pa … ero-a-gas/

Why are they not looking at renewable sources to provide this requirement when we all know that naural gas prices now are going through the roof, and if there are problems with Russia and Iran which have the biggest reserves, the prices will only move higher?

The sun and wind is free and readily available here in DR.

planner

Wow that is seriously flawed!

DominicanadaMike

While renewable resources are preferred, wind and sun are not always available so other sources need to be included as part of the overall solution.  Having these expensive facilities sitting idly on standby is also not practical not to mention costs will not be easily recovered.  Maintenance still plays a big role on equipment whether it is in use or not.

New additions to the capacity need to be clean energy. we have more than enough of the  expensive  earth damaging facilities!

DR currently uses about 3000MW of which 2400MW is thermoelectric.

Plenty of scope to expand green generation with storage for the very limited periods when the country cannot generate solar or wind energy. The country is blessed with  constant tradewinds in many locations and the sun shines almost every day in many provinces.

Thermoelectric generation relies on imported materials and those costs will only go up and up and be subject to global events.

Of course one can pass those inflationary costs onto the consumer.

DominicanadaMike

I didn't disagree, I only said there needs to be a mix.  Why is everything about who is right and who is not....geeez!

Here in Punta Cana, the solar installations have been halted by CEPM.  Apparently they have their quota from what I am told but expert Lennox can probably shed a little light on that.  No pun intended!

Guest2022

The overall solution for DR needs more green energy and not fossil fuels.

The issue in Punta Cana where few Dominicans live permanenly is a local one and the new 800MW mentioned in the article to which you replied, if read, relates to additional supply to the 3 EDEs.

Enjoy your sarcasm moment.

Looks like price hikes may be on the way for electricity supplied to some by the private power companies supplying places like Punta Cana, Macao, Bayahibe, Casa De Campo and Las Galeras as government subsidies on fuel costs are removed:

The Government will begin the dismantling of exemptions for isolated generators

https://www.diariolibre.com/economia/en … as/1633919

The Dominican Government will begin the gradual dismantling of tax exemptions on fuels received by electricity generating companies established in isolated systems or for their own non-interconnected consumption until the complete elimination of that privilege.........

Impacted companies

In addition to the generator Corporación Energética Turística Juanillo (Cap Cana Caribe), the Punta Cana-Macao Energy Consortium, the Punta Cana Tourism Services Corporation, Costasur Dominicana-Casa De Campo, Generadora Eléctrica de Samaná, Compañía de Electricidad de Bayahibe receive exemptions ...................................

@stacey are you actually in the DR?  What part?
Guest2022
Well according to Staceys profile she is from Vietnam living in Vietnam and wanting information about DR. Doesn't add up with the name given?

If posters can't be honest about who they are and where they live, it is no different to spam and all those posts should be removed.

And because I don't assume the current status is accurate I ask the question!

I will see what happens first.  Nothing posted to date is spam etc. If that changes I will take action. 😁

@lennoxnev what is thermoelectric. Did you mean to say Hydroelectric?

Guest2022
No.

DR uses fossil fuels for thermoelectric generation for a lot of its electricity. Hydro electric represents a much smaller percentage as do renewables. There is no nuclear power which would be thermoelectric too.

Putting it simply, fuels burning or in the case of nuclear fuel reacting, generate heat which is used to heat liquids/gases which drive turbines which generate electricity.

In hydroelectric you use the kinetic energy of falling water to turn those turbines.

Some of the smaller generation plants including private companies will be using fuel driven engines to turn turbines. Not sure about the small gas plants but guess the biofuel plant in SPM may be thermo electric
Guest2022

@lennoxnev So you mean gas and/or diesel powered turbines.  I was not sure if you were saying nuclear power station. Understood.
