Terminology in the Dominican Rental Market

Post new topic

dominicangringo

Hi all,

I am currently looking for a place to rent in Santo Domingo and have stumbled upon a few terms I wanted to get some clarity on when it comes to amenities of the apartment. Can someone please explain what the following things mean in the Dominican rental market?

1. Planta Eléctrica Full
2. Gas comun
3. Cuarto de servicio
4. Línea blanca (I know it means furnished with appliances, but is there a consensus on which appliances are always included or does it vary)
5. Cisterna y pozo tubular

Feel free to add any other words/terms you all may have stumbled upon when searching for your rental. Thank you in advance!

1. Planta electrici full is back up power by generator

2. Gas comun is cooking propane is supplied from a common source but may or may not cost extra

3. Cuarto de servicio was meant to be live in maids room usually with small bathroom.  I use mine for storage

4. Linea Blanca means appliances but nothing more it does not indicate furnished.  Often fridge stove and hit water heater.  Don't assume anything always ask what it means

5. Cisterna is a big hole in the ground for holding water.  Pozo is a well.  And tinaco is a giant plastic container in the roof to hold water, usually black.

Good questions to be asking!

Fiador is a guarantor on a rental contract here.

Additionally, something really important in the rental terminology are:
garantia de vicios ocultos= guarantee against hidden defects
fuerza mayor= force majeure
The last very important these days.
