I need advice for purchasing auto insurance here in the DR.  Who have you used?  How much is it costing you monthly.  (we arrived monday and this is day 2)

Welcome to the forums.  Car insurance depends on the year and value if the vehicle and what coverage you purchase.  You need an honest helpful agent to walk you through this.  Where are you located?

And insurance isn't paid monthly.  The best I have seen is three payments over three months.

Well, it depends upon your area. First of all, auto insurance here is really different.  If you get into an accident, your company will pay for the repairs.  A conflict of interest right off the bat.  They will try to repair your vehicle as cheap as possible with used parts, bubble gum and whatever.  The repairs although should take a few days will take months and of course you are without a car, even though the delays are your insurance companies fault.  The insurance company buys the parts and send them to the repair shop.  The repair shop will install what they receive and whatever they are missing becomes a bubble gum repair.   So, based upon the repair shop in your area, go and find out which company is the best in the are based on number of repairs being made (not what they tell you).  Usually you will find a number of storage areas in the repair shop marked with the insurance companies name.  The larger and full area is usually th most popular insurance company.  Also, while you are at the repair shop, talk to some of the customers and they will tell you which one is good.  My experience is that none of them are any good.

Try to get a policy with zero deductible and unlimited rental cars.  A little more expensive but imo worth it.

Maphre, Sura, Ban Reservas, Universal...are all big car insurance companies.

Good luck.
