Rental during Brexit Transition - Residency and EU protection?

Hi

Now I have been having a think about some of the problems/issues we are having due to Brexit and the transition period getting shorted and shorted - this coupled with the Covid related restrictions on travel etc. have forced a rethink.....

If we were to move out during transition into a 6 months+ rental somewhere then this would obviously allow us more time to check out different parts of the island for suitability during the summer temperature peaks and also to search at leisure for a suitable long term property.

Could we do this and apply for residency during transition - and beyond - and if so would this benefit us in any way with regard to "protecting" any of our current EU related rights - especially with respect to healthcare ? - not expecting this to negate the need for some kind of basic private health insurance.....

Also - are landlords/agents usually OK renting to pet owners ?

What do you think ?

Thanks

Jim

yes all are possible for sure  - i have friend coming over from Malta in November and they have already booked a 2bed townhouse for 5months... to do the trawl around areas and find somewhere to buy.

by gaining your MEU1 residency permit you are protecting your rights to stay here for the length of time you live here.. and your right to return freely and go to and from your homeland freely

Healthcare if you work would be covered by your SI contributions and would entitle you to GESY... if not and not on state pension then its private healthcare... There is currently no means to pay voluntary contributions but it is envisaged to be allowed at some stage. Initially and until you are actually resident here your UK issued ehic (until Dec 31st) will cover you as a tourist for emergency treatment... but not for residency applications...

and yes some landlords do rent to pet owners  - some may want an extra deposit in case of pet damages... but you dont get if you dont ask....

the reality is it limits properties available to you as pet owners but i dont know anyone who has failed  to find somewhere that accepts pets.

As ive said and had confirmed by Immigration in an earlier thread there is no legal limitation/requirement on the length of rental period for residency applications

NB i believe that as long as you have booked your MEU1 appointment pre dec 31st 2020 even if the actual residency interview is in 2021 (upto june 2021) it will proceed as normal and in accordance with regulations and legislation

Hi Folks - am I reading the residency permit regulations correctly?

If applying before buying a property do you really need to have a rental agreement for at least a year?

Jim

There is no legal requirement to have a rental lease of 12 months for a residency application

Toon

EMAIL I RECEIVED....

Hello!
There is no legal time constraint on the lease contract. Keep in mind that when they relocate they will have to declare to our offices the new address so that their application will be sent to the new address.

It may be out of date am afraid as i think there is no pink slip (unless it was a nonEU thing) My belief is  they had to be replaced with MEU1 OR MEU3 and this has been in place for quite some time  - - Ive been here 6 years so for at least that length of time and probably much longer. There are a number of glaring errors in the article as the figures quoted are not accurate - e.g the current  fee for residency is €20.. the current minimum income requirement for eu nationals is about €480 per month per person  and approx 50% of that for each dependent, these also differ for nonEU too  also the deposits to a cypriot bank are for Non-EU & can be much higher - there is currently no requirement to deposit funds in to a cypriot bank for EU nationals.... .... The current yellow slip (MEU1/ MEU3) doesnt expire it is Open, However this may change as Uk is beyond transition and when Cyprus and other EU states issue the new residency cards as they have to cover and address the UK/EU Withdrawal Agreement as that confers rights as legit British residents in Cyprus and other states to the holders of the cards.
Things may change as regards the expiry dates once UK is out of transition and it may be that as a non EU national they impose a yearly renewal until 5 years when permanent residency can be applied for

The email I posted here came direct from the Immigration dept as a reply to a direct and specific question.

I do know people who had the pink slip and they ve replaced it with the yellow slip (MEU1 AND MEU3)  I further know others who have the pink slip now and have never bothered which will ultimately cause them a few problems  albeit not insurmountable ones...
