Many questions on moving to Ireland

Post new topic

Modhutt

Hi. My name is Maria and I currently live in Washington, DC with my family. Our family had hoped to live in Ireland for a portion of 2020-2021 but Covid has changed some of those plans with so many travel restrictions. My understanding is that person from the United States can still travel to Ireland  We have flexibility and are considering anywhere from 2-6 months starting hopefully in late September or early October. I am focused on Galway but open to other suggestions of towns / cities by the water. Myself and my three children are Irish citizens and hold passports but have never lived in Ireland (I gained my Irish citizenship through my grandfather and my three children received it because of my status prior to their births). My husband does not have an Irish passport. I have many many questions about our options. The best place to start would be

a) are our Irish passports enough to allow us to arrive and stay in Ireland indefinitely? Does we need other papers before arriving?

b) can my husband join us if he can show that he would be working remotely with his company in America? What type of visa does he need to come with us and work remotely in Ireland?

c) Is there a thread dedicated to the current status of schools / sports in Ireland and what our options may be in these areas?

Best,

Maria

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

To answer your questions:

a.  You and your children are Irish citizens with the same rights as every other Irish citizen, assuming you have valid Irish passports, you need no further immigration documents.

b.  For your husband, he doesn't need an entry visa.  Please read this link regarding the work permit.  He will need a work permit to work from home for a non domestic company.   Remote working is becoming more common, many EU countries make specific provision for it; the question will be how will he reconcile the fact he will be living in 2 tax regimes (US and Ireland) - US law requires all citizens to file IRS tax returns and State tax returns even when living abroad - but that's between you guys and the taxmen to resolve.

c.  Haven't seen a thread about schools/sports.  When I lived in Ireland many years ago, the schools were generally pretty good; I do recall that religion (the Catholic faith in particular) played a large part in many schools, but it was never intrusive for those of us of a different/no faith.  The Irish Government has a website where you can look at specific school reports; this link will take you straight there.

As for sports; they play a large part in the country.  They have some sports which are unique to Ireland and others more easily recognised.  There is a Wiki page on the subject in gerneral; rather than me repeat it, this link will take you straight there.

If you have any further specific questions, please come back to us.

Hope this helps.
