Forbes  & InternationalLiving reports about Retirement for US citizens

1. Forbes Magazine (April, 2020)

Forbes recommends Algarve as “one of the best places in the world” to pass the renovation, post the coronavirus.

As a way of easing the tensions caused by the pandemic that is affecting the USA and the world, Forbes recommended Algarve to enjoy its reform as soon as the Covid-19 crisis passes. “The Algarve region in Portugal is one of the main options for enjoying the renovation where you can restart your health, self-resilience and sense of community”, reads in the publication.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/kathleenpe … p-options/

It starts by highlighting the good weather and sunshine throughout the year and, of course, security in the country. “Portugal is considered the third safest country in the world”, while also mentioning “important investments in good infrastructure”.

There are many more advantages, according to Forbes. From health care, “high quality” and only cost “a fraction” compared to the USA, to great beaches, to the language (since “English is widely spoken”) to affordable living costs and healthy eating. Forbes makes reference to the fishing industry and the quality of the fish, adding that "the Portuguese are the largest consumers of fish per capita in Europe". “Year-round sunshine and fertile land also means an abundance of fresh produce in Algarve. Meanwhile, pollution rates are low and streets, cities and beaches are clean.”

2. InternationalLiving.com

InternationalLiving website has announced Portugal as the top pick for an overseas retirement in 2020, "The World's Best Retirement Haven 2020".

https://internationalliving.com/countries/portugal/

Portugal ranks first overall in InternationalLiving.com's Annual Global Retirement Index 2020. It led the Health, Climate and Housing categories, with a good score in the Adaptation / Entertainment and Development categories.

Long under the radar for Americans to live, Portugal offers the romance of the old world at an affordable price. International Living reveals the country's charms, from historical heritage to architecture, old castles and palaces, and modern structures. "It exudes history, beauty and a quiet life that is - by any standard other than financial - rich. Although expatriates don't have to be rich to enjoy good life. Those who are already living there, report that their spending in Portugal is about a third of what it cost in the US. And when it comes to health, Portugal has some of the best doctors and medical training available anywhere," this publication says.

And it adds: "As a retirement destination, Portugal is simply fantastic - but it's also one of the top candidates for digital nomads. Guimarães, in the north of Portugal, is an increasingly popular choice among young expatriates. This ancient city was chosen by the first king of Portugal in 1128 as the first capital of Portugal. Today it is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site".

Your IL's Overseas Retirement Calculator

https://internationalliving.com/retirement-calculator/

A growing number of Americans are researching their options for a better life outside the US and International Living's new Overseas Retirement Calculator was created to guide them to places where their budgets would provide a quality life at low cost and where they could pay and retire much sooner than if they stayed at home. Portugal is at the top of the list of the best destinations.

"At International Living, we are seeing a big increase in consultations about moving from the US," says Jennifer Stevens, executive editor of IL . "The first thing people want to know is if it's really possible. It is and can be much easier and more accessible than most people think. Then they want to know where to go and when they can get there. Our new Overseasa Retirement Calculator is designed to answer those questions".

Stevens goes on to say that "everywhere in the world, it costs a lot less to live better than in the United States. Instead of saving until you're 66 in the hope that it will give you enough to live on in the future, you may well have saved enough - if you go to a place where the cost of living is half (or less) than it would be in the US.

The calculator is based on the "50:30:20 rule," which allocates 50% of a retiree's income to needs such as housing and bills, 30% to needs - including food, entertainment, travel and so on, and the remaining 20% to financial management such as savings and debt repayment.

The results of the calculator take into account the cost of living in each country and are also linked to the economy reported by the user. It assumes that a user must have at least the same savings as the cost of living for an entire year in a location. (In other words, if the cost of living in a country is $20,000 per year, a person using the calculator must have at least that amount in savings before they retire there).

And remember... What the pandemic has shown us is how fragile our certainties of stability are.

The Covid-19 has changed our lives and its impact and consequences will continue to be felt in each of us for a long time to come. We must value the special moments in our lives as long as we are healthy, physically and mentally, in order to do so with quality of life. As the Portuguese people saying goes, ‘A vida são dois dias, o Carnaval são três!’ (Life lasts for two days, carnival lasts for three!).

Today, 23rd August, the final UEFA Champions League 2020, takes place in Lisbon. The French Paris Saint-Germain plays against the German Bayern Munich after both sides came through the 'final eight' tournament in Portugal, which was the scaled-down, expedited solution for concluding this competition this year, impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

May the best team win!  :)

Tricia Pimental and her personal experience of being an expat in Portugal

After traveling throughout the world, expatriate writer Tricia Pimental has settled in Central Portugal to live the good life. Her travels include most of Europe, the Baltic States, Russia, and parts of the Middle East.

Yet, after leaving her native Brooklyn (New York) and lived in more than a dozen US places, including New York, California, Florida, New Hampshire, Nevada and Utah, Tricia never imagined she’d ultimately end up settling down in a romantic cottage and vineyard in Central Portugal.  But, she did!  In fact, she and her husband, Keith, have lived in the small village of Castelo Branco since 2012. Currently, she writes expatriate dispatches for International Living and has written a memoir as well as two books on Portugal.

In these videos and interviews, Tricia speaks of her decision to move to Portugal, of her expatriate experience and of what takes to make Portugal one’s home.

"So you want to MOVE to Portugal?!" is an online space where I will host free or low-cost classes and Q&A's for people who want to visit, learn more about, or live in Portugal. As someone who started visiting Portugal several years ago, and then purchased property and moved with my family, I experienced first-hand the joys AND challenges of moving to another country. I wanted to reach back to help others who are considering a similar leap."
