Hi Friends,
I keep trying to get a clear timeline of what happens next but im afraid the way my lawyer is explaining it to me is just not clear
So please let me explain
I am a British citizen that has lived in Hong Kong for the last 17 years
I came to Portugal in September of last year and obtained my fiscal number.
I returned to Portugal at the beginning of December and signed a lease on an apartment which I am now paying for .
Whilst in Portugal I went to the Republica Portuguesa with my passport, my lease contract my fiscal number certificate, my fee and a couple of other things.
After completing an application form and being interviewed, I was given a certificate
Certificado de registro de cidadao da uniao Europeia It was issued on December 15th 2020 and is valid to 15th December 2025

So what should happen next? do I now have Non habitual residency? is it to come later? if so when? Is there anything i need to do now? Do I/will i get some sort of passport or identity card?
At the moment all i have is the certificate of registration (as above)

Best

John

Hi
We are at the same stage in the process.
My understanding is that the next step is to re-register your NIF to your Portuguese address at your local finanças and then apply for your NHR status online.  I will update you if we find the process to be different 🙂

Thanks very appreciated

Yes.
That is the way.
NHR is not automatically given, you need to apply as stated.

Financas will provide you with a password and access for online NHR application.

If I recall it is in Portuguese and a little tricky and I thought it wasn't very clear if the application was successful once applied online, but later a certificate and notification is given that all is accepted.
Good luck.

Hi All :)

Welcome to the New Members.

These are different processes. Since you took your certificate of residence before 31 December 2020, you have this resident status as a citizen of the European Union, valid until 2025, then it can be renewed. Without tax benefits.

Another thing is the status of non habitual resident (NHR), which has tax benefits, as long as you reside in Portugal for at least 6 months and 1 day in each year.

You will have to apply for this NHR status, it is not granted automatically.

You have here the step-by-step process to get NHR (in english).

Residence and tax benefits are not linked - the tax benefits are granted for 10 years irrespective if a EU citizen or not
