Post new topic

TheJimbo

Hi All-
This is Jimbo.  I have lived abroad before, and I would like to live in Malaysia.  It seems like such a good mix of culture, food, clean and safe environment, plus affordable living.

I might like to join the MM2H program when it starts up again.  For now, I just want to come an visit Malaysia for a few months to see if it suits me.  I think it will be a great place to live.

Looking to meet anyone excited about living in KL!

Yes Malaysia is an easy place to live. Most everyone speaks English or at least passable English, cost of living is quite inexpensive, people are friendly, plenty to see and do there. Also you can easily drive or take a bus or train to Melaka, Penang, Cameron Highlands, Genting Highlands, the East coast and even down to Singapore. Kuala Lumpur is the perfect hub for traveling to other Asia countries too. In Kl, probably one of the best places for food and for shopping. Lots of temples, mosques, shopping malls, night markets etc. Driving in KL is easy as people basically follow the rules.

I lived there for 12 years and left because I wanted to live experience living in other places. But KL is definitely a very easy and nice place to live.

Thanks for your encouragement.  Does anyone know how to learn more about the Covid policies?  Like, when would it be safe to come, and what documents do you need to provide?
Cheers!

I see youre from CA, and currently US is on the 23-country ban list for entry here. Malaysia, for now, wont accept anyone from a country with a flu season and that may extend past covid, I dont know. Im from CA too and have been here more than 20 years. I travel back and forth but have been locked down since the start of covid. So, its not a matter of lets say meeting a requirement for entry, there is no entry at all. As it is, people have to apply for a permit to leave and in the case of US, there is no re-entry if you leave Malaysia and want to come back. The vaccine has started here and while I have no plan to take it, there might be a policy to allow entry for those who have taken it but there is no firm policy about anything yet. That said, before I came here I took shots for Hepatitis A and B and Typhus and thats recommended. You can do that before you come and for now all you can really do is keep reading in the forum and learn all you can. Ok, and having said all that, you can also be following airlines, like looking for flights here on skyscanner.com because they will tell you the countries that are open for travel or not, as well as projected timelines. Some airlines think by April they could resume service but it depends on what the countries want to do. Some news says no airlines until 2022, some say 2024. You can also go to the govt covid website and keep up to date on things. Most govt sites have an ENGLISH button and if not, try right-click TRANSLATE if using Chrome.

Also be checking the immigration website for any updates.

If you would like to know about cost of living, try numbeo, com to compare prices with where you are now.

Expatriates have a number of things in common they want to know about but also things individual to their circumstances so its good to ask questions. In general, just start reading back in the forum and pick out topics and questions from others that interest you because likely all of your questions have been answered one way or the other.

When the time comes, its best to plan the maximum visa time of 3-months so that you can have the time to go around check things out. Before I decided I want to stay, I did that a few times.

There are people in here who are in MM2H and can answer your specific questions. The program is undergoing changes currently, and during the virus I think nothing is happening at all so a lot of people are waiting.

Hi Jim!

Happy to help you get used to life here in Malaysia when you eventually get settled down! I was in CA for a while after graduation and received a lot of kindness from people there, and it would be my pleasure to help someone get settled into Malaysia, though it seems like you’ve got your bases covered already with the specific advice that everyone here has been so kind as to give!

I sell and manage a portfolio of real estate in the Bangsar South area and also serve as a college applications counselor - If there’s anything that I can specifically assist you with in regards to either of the above or you just want to chat with someone who is originally from Malaysia and lives here, please feel free to let me know and drop me a line :)
