As a 70 year old ex pat living in Vietnam, 2 days ago I contacted 2 hospitals in HCMC (Care Plus & FV) about the possibility of getting a Covid jab & of course paying for it. Both replied it was not  as yet available.

if vietnam gets vaccines, priority will be put on vietnamese citizens. and it will not be available for the highest bidder as its considered a product of national interest. we will need to wait until 2022.

Official information from the MoH:

Starting March 8, people who belong in the 11 priority groups will be vaccinated with AstraSeneca at 18 Covid facilities. The highest priority is given to Hải Dương, followed by the 13 epidemic provinces (Quảng Ninh, Saigon, Hà Nội, Gia Lai, Bình Dương, Bắc Ninh, Điện Biên, Hưng Yên, Hòa Bình, Bắc Giang, Hải Phòng, and Hà Giang.)

The 11 priority groups are:
- medical personnel,
- epidemic prevention staff (steering committees at all levels, isolation staff, and reporters);
- diplomats, customs officers, immigration officers;
- military;
- police force;
- teachers;
- Vietnamese nationals of 65 years old and over
- employees providing essential services such as aviation, transportation, tourism, electricity, and water services;
- Vietnamese nationals with chronic diseases;
- Vietnamese nationals working or studying abroad;
- Vietnamese nationals in epidemic zones.

The inclusion of tourism as essential service does seem a bit odd.  In Hawaii where tourism is the #1 industry, officials have refused to push tourism employees up the list.  How could they be seen as that critical to the economy and public health of Vietnam?

And how could tourism be so important to the country when the government threw the existing tourists to the wolf (aka the opportunists or crooked agents)? How difficult is it to give the in-country tourists an equal opportunity chance to stay during Covid — an equal fee for a renewal stamp, for instance — so they can have peace of mind?

In addition, not all people who work in tourism are created equal. Some of them are young people who graduated from a course in hospitality, worked as waitstaff in a hotel, couldn’t pronounce “concierge” if their lives depend on it, and think there are two syllables in the word “spa”.  Are those kids more important to the country than a farmer (who is not in the priority groups)?

I contacted the consulate in HCMC a few weeks ago asking if there would be any future program for US expats to have access to a COVID shot. The reply was, “nothing was in the works”. It does seem to me that US seniors living in foreign countries should be in some kind of pecking order in their countries thoughts.

Consulates are as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike. They should be going in to bat for their citizens overseas, instead, they are too busy attending functions and dinners at the expense of their people.

Not a government viewpoint, but I hope they listen.  The moment the government announces they will allow in vaccinated tourists, even if they require a quarantine, I'm on my way back to the US to get my shots.

I usually cant put up with his verbosity, but Eli the Bike Guy pretty much explains why pronouncements from the Vietnam Tourism Association need to be taken with a grain of salt.  The key stuff starts at 4 minutes.
Eli on tourism opening

Better to keep watching OB's thread on official pronouncements.

That's the reason I don't post anything unless it's directly from the government -- mainly VGP, MoH (Medical), Consulates, and the Law Library (law updates come to my inbox so it's easy).

If I have more time, then I check on MoLISA (Labour) and MoHA (Home Affairs).  I ignore BVHTTDL (Tourism) because they never have anything useful, instead they let the Consulates publishing the news.

Even when I read something in Tuoi Tre, which is the official mouth piece of the Communist Youth Union,  I still verify with VGP and other ministries because Tuoi Tre has committed more than a few errors in the past.  I ignore all other newspapers no matter the names, including VNExpress, because they regurgitate news from one another as well as using articles from dubious foreign media (Daily Mail, for instance.)
