Hi

Am living in Hungary and may get a job from a UK company (remote working)  but they want to pay my salary into a UK bank account, does anyone know which bank in the UK allows you to open an international bank account. I have looked at Lloyds, and Bank of Scotland and when you state which country you live in this case Hungary, they state they do not cover this country!

Possibly am look for the wrong account type but I will be nonresident, anybody got any idea or experience with same?

What you experiencing is a unexpected consequence of Brexit.

But have a look here - https://www.revolut.com and here - https://n26.com/en-eu or even here - https://wise.com/hu/multi-currency-account/

These used to be options and might still be.

Last time I opened a UK account they insisted on me proving I was a UK resident

I've just tried this and got a very solid 'get lost'
https://apply.metrobankonline.co.uk/apply/

Here's a few more to try

Good luck

Be careful opening a high street bank, a lot of them have been closing accounts to those that are not resident in the UK.

I would go with what Fluffy has said.

I still have a Barclays account, but I have had the account 40 years and I still have it with my UK address which is also my dads. I just use it for pocket money when I visit the UK.

N26 is no longer available to UK residents, so not sure how well it's supported post Brexit. But spending time in both the UK and Hungary I can vouch for both Revolut and Wise (formally TransferWise).
I'd say Wise seems more established and I have proper Hungarian bank account details, Euro account and proper GBP sort-code and account number.
Revolut have charges when going over certain limits, and they removed the ability to have your own Hungarian account details, instead you send to their account with your specific code as the reference - so makes me think Wise might be the best first choice.

I also lived in the UK and worked there, it was easy enough to open a bank-account (honestly more difficult to close then to open). Brexit will have consequences and to open a local (UK) bank-account might be difficult. For me it was already not too easy to be contracted from Hungary (admittedly as a consultant not per se as a remote worker).

Having said that if a company hires remote workers they really should accept paying into the country of origin (in this case Hungary), opening a GBP account is easy enough, (I have to say a foreign currency account in Hungary is expensive)

You might even present your case to a Hungarian bank and ask them to open a dedicated account which is then sweeped to your Hungarian account. It sounds a bit suspicious though. Still presenting your Hungarian bank with your issue might be a good option, surely you are not the only one with this problem. (in a way I had the same issue (but resolved it with my employer rather then the bank)

Please let us know if they stop you because of some address issues in the UK.

If they do, it's probably going to be Brexit related.

Not surprised about N26.

I got into an argument with (Transfer)Wise.   They started nagging me to provide some paperwork or something.   What they failed to understand is that I used them for a one off event and had no need to use them again. It took about 2 months before I actually realised they were asking the wrong question which was "to use this service you need XYZ" but actually they should have asked "will you use this service again" and the answer was "no".  That was quite a while ago.

I think the key element is having a UK account number and UK sort code plus correct matching name.  Then it's job done.

it's definitely possible.

All the faffing about is AML, KYC and ATF aka Anti-Money Laundering, Know Your Customer and Anti-Terrorist Financing.

We can blame Bin Laden for most of that and Brexit for much else!
