My realtor is trying to tell me that the rental prices for a house in Puerto Plata have gone up by like $300US per month in the last few months. Can anyone confirm this strange phenomenon? Anyone got an agent in Puerto Plata who doesn't assume all gringos are rich. Heading down to th DR on Wednesday.

Have you checked Airbnb listings? You might find good deals there

We found a great deal in Cabarete on VRBO (did not do the rental through them, though).

I am pretty sure that is not true!   Rental prices for long term or longer term are not up.  Weekend rentals maybe.

You need a different realtor.  They are likely setting you up for only higher prices units!

That happened to me last fall.  The locals realtors always have a story to make you think there’s no other option.

I assumed airbnb would be even worse but when I looked, there were much cooler places for cheaper.  Then once we were here we found much cheaper long term options.  Just through word of mouth.

Boots on the ground!  Hit the road and check out areas.

Realtors only show you what they represent. So you miss let's say 95% of what's out there. We have no MLS or anything like it.  Rather than share commissions they only show you their listings!  It's stupid and short sighted.

Critical points!  Us ex-pats are used to the lazy way - pulling up MLS listings on-line while enjoying our morning coffee. That doesn't work well here. We used to work with one realtor and their internet listings, which was a mistake. Get out there and talk with locals and ex-pats. You'll see more listings, AND get the scoop on where you may want to live and not want to live, and who to deal with (and not deal with)    :0)
