Hello.  I was doing research on Mauritius and I found out that there are earthquakes in Mauritius, and actually one happen yesterday or today but the news was not very clear if it was serious. I don't understand much about earthquakes but I would like to know if earthquakes in Mauritius cause a lot of damage and if people die.

Hello,

No earthquake in Mauritius, only seismic events further in the ocean. No ground movement, wave movement or material damage was recorded. We didn't even feel anything.

Regards,
A

Thank you. You are refering to the most recent occurrence right? What about previously? Is there ever been an earthquake that caused damage or death?

Thanks

If it was an earthquake and you didn't feel it, it was definitely not to be
mentioned in the news. If it was serious it would have mentioned.
I live in Greece and considering Mauritius, Greece gets many earthquakes
especially small ones that we usually don't even feel. If you google
Mauritius earthquake for yesterday you should see some results.

there was a 6.6 earthquake the day you mention. But the mainland was not the epicentre, but somewhere around in the sea, But to be honest at 6.6 i'm surprised you didn't feel it!

I don't live in Mauritius.

I was planning to but after watching videos on you tube I felt I would get
bored too fast, seems great for a holiday but the lack of strong culture,
architecture etc changed my mind. Off to Asia instead, full of culture!

It seems that my comment from yesterday was removed, at least I can not find it here. I do not really understand why as it can not have been offensive.

Here again my link to the quake recorded on May 12 not far from Rodrigues.

And here the German and English translation of an article published in l'express on May 16 about the phenomen of frequent quakes in our region

Any major earthquakes would have knocked the head off Peter Booth centuries/millennia ago. A sign that nothing major has happened in a while.
