What do you think of cigarettes prices?

Post new topic

EuropeWord

What is your opinion on expensive cigarettes prices? Do you think raising the price is a good thing or a bad thing?
I think that smoking should cost as much as possible so that lots of people can quit. Smoking is useless and sickens!!

Thats probably quite true, myself included. In Korea they are really cheap about $2.50 US for a pack of Marlboros.

Am from New Zealand and they are going to be about $20.00 a pack soon. That should deter many from smoking I expect, however over time all the increases didn't really do anything to make people stop. At one point a few years ago, according to statistics there were more people smoking than ever before. The government did one good thing and subsidised the costs of nicotine replacement therapy which has helped some stop. I don't think the success rate is all that high with gums or patches.

Cigarettes and alcohol will always be a target for government tax increases purely for the reason, they can. It's a great revenue gatherer after traffic infringements because tax is collected at point of sale.

have you heard the new type of cigarette, they call it e-cigarette. same us cigarette but it will not give you any side effect i think. smoke is still visible but harmless, the lighted part was made of tiny bulb it really looks like cigar. i believed that this is the solution to all chain smokers cheap price, no nicotine, no air polution and less people will be put in health danger. try it.

Have seen and tried some. Here in Korea they are very expensive and highly taxed. I imagine this is a deterrant to stopping the collection of enormous taxes on tobacco products. I read somewhere that Koreans consumed around 14 trillion USD worth of tobacco and alcohol last year.

even the price is high, taxes are being added you still buy...well stopping it is all yours. do you know that time eqality losses everytime you smoke....

better use the money spent on cigarettes instead on buying books which can give us better insights rather than on cigarettes which gives cancer

i dont smoke .

Thats good that you don't smoke but remember everybody has choices in life. Currently my choice is to smoke. It's the same as the choice on which one chooses to spend money on. It's all personal preference and nobody is actually right. Smoking is harmful, this is true and all smoker know this, but it's the decision of the person on whether he/she chooses to smoke and nobody has the right to tell them different.

kiwiinkorea

Government are always going to tell you that smoking is detrimental to your health, but they're not going to ban it because they make far too much money in taxes. In many cases governments have financial interests in tobacco productions, kind of hypocritical don't you think?

Smoking is an addiction.  Raising the price will not cure people.  Junkies will steal to get their fix.  The price doesn't matter.  If cigarettes cost $1000, smokers will do whatever they have to to get some.
