Government schools

I wouldn't recommend any government school apart from Loretto schools and Saint Esprit school in Quatre-Bornes. If you want better wages apply to English-speaking private schools such as West Coast in Cascavelle.

Unfortunately Westcoast don’t have any positions at the moment. The school I had an interview with was also a private school & I was told my wage would be $28,000 rupees a month. This is less than what it would be costing me to send my children to school. I don’t know how anyone can afford the private schooling over there!

Unless you are coming to Mauritius as an investor, generating your own income, you would be employed at the same level as a Mauritian. If you were employed on a work permit there is a basic amount you are required to earn from your employment to meet all requirements etc. Government schools although on the Cambridge Schooling system and are technically English medium, generally operate in either Creole or French from a spoken point of view although the work is in English. Also, there are no extra curricular activities like what you would be used to in Australia. If children want to do sports they generally then belong to private sports clubs or centers which are pricy. In general, the cost of living here can be expensive and the salary you were offered would not cover much even if your children did attend a government school. Also, expats generally pay more for private schooling whereas locals pay less. At the moment with the pandemic, the government schools are closed still and a few private schools are maintaining lessons online.

Could you consider doing private tutoring with expat families outside of school hours to cover the difference ?

If you are taking kids for tution then you can earn additional maybe or maybe not with income tax. This is how the public school teachers maintain a decent life. You always see a big houses frequently going in and out with lots of kids. You know these house owners are teachers.
