Hi,

I'm an American, and am considering going to CR for some time. I think we get 3 months, and if I'm not mistaken, we now need:

1 proof of health insurance
2 to fill out a health form in Spanish
3 proof on onward travel

to extend the max stay, I know people do border runs.

I'm self-employed and work online. Anyone know:

of a way to legally stay past 90 days?
if I do border run(s), would I have to have #s 1 and 2 every time I return?

Thank you

to stay past  get residency, marry a Costa Rican, or have a baby here.
As of now the rule is get insurance for length of time you stay. so yes need insurance and the health form. Neither of which is hard to do just need to pay the insurance. Proof of onward is needed also but could be cheap bus ticket to Nica or air ticket you can change.

Border runs are a hassle but can be combined with visiting Nicaragua or Panama or cheap flights to Bogota Colombia.

Not that big a deal to stay awhile and see if it is for you.

Best of luck

The only way to extend your stay is to file for residency (or have the pandemic changing policy again).  If you leave the country, expect to re-qualify to get back in.  Just as a little advice - I bought my son a full year of covid insurance for what his 2 3-month insurance policies would have cost.  He makes 2 3-month visits per year and this way, his travel dates are covered so no need to keep going to get a new policy and figure out travel dates.

I been making border runs for 8 years. I usually stay longer than 90 .more like up to a year and a half but CR is turning into a police state so it might be harder. Check points everywhere. Checkout  Nicaragua before  CR.

Problem is that Nic has a higher crime rate and covid there is worse than CR.  I can't answer for anything else, but I stay away from there

Actually Nicaraguan  crime rate is the lowest in latin America and personally  i would rather have my government keep silent than lie like Costa Rica and the USA. Definitely more freedom in Nicaragua than CR

Could you share please what insurance company you have used?

thanks for the tips. Seems Nica is more expensive to fly into than CR, looking into options.
