Documentation necessary to arrive Ecuador

Post new topic

Fati Felton

Someone knows exactly the documentation that need a Canadian citizen to arrive to Ecuador? I have a friend that is coming here to Ecuador soon and doesn't know what papers really need.  Immigration in colombia fined her big for not having the right documents.

At the very least she needs her passport (of course) & either a negative COVID test (PCR OR Rapid Antigen), or documentation that she received the full round of vaccinations. If she has the latter, it may be a good idea to make a photocopy of the document. At the airport in Guayaquil they were making copies, but I think if she has a copy it will be easier for her. Also Canadians do not need a special visa to enter Ecuador, same as for US citizens; they are issued a travel visa at the point of entry.

You usually have to fill out forms on the flight in, & they get annoyed at you if you arrive at the airport with the forms not completed. So take a pen.

Last time I travelled to Ecuador was April 26, returning May 22.

I flew internationally into Quito one week ago today (arriving June 6).

At the airport in Houston, I showed my USA passport and the card issued by the pharmacy indicating I had received two Moderna shots.

Arriving in Quito, I showed the passport, the Moderna card and my permanent Ecuador visa.

An arriving USA or Canadian citizen who does not have a visa typically gets a stamp on his or her passport upon arrival.  This is not a travel visa.  However, it can be renewed for additional months.

I just got my passport in the mail today and I'm excited to get to Ecuador. I read that they make you show a round trip ticket or proof that your moving on.
Should I try and take care of a residence visa from the states or is it okay to just show up see if I like it and take care of things there

Dear Tom,

Welcome to the Ecuador forums of Expat.com ...

Bring your documents, but decide in Ecuador whether you want to go ahead with a visa application.  Getting documents apostilled is always much cheaper when you're in your home country.

I have seen no documented cases of a well-dressed Expat being denied air travel or admission to Ecuador based on a one-way ticket.  Bring a recent copy showing a healthy bank balance if you are concerned.  And show up wearing a tie and shined shoes, not a T-shirt and flip-flops.

You didn't ask about health insurance;  I'd recommend you get travel health insurance at least for the start of the Ecuador trip.

Another travel hack is to bring a copy of a bus schedule for travel from an Ecuador city to Peru or Colombia.  You can explain you were going to buy a bus ticket (upon arrival in Ecuador) if they give you a hard time in the unlikely case of a one-way-ticket discussion.
