MVV requirments

Hi All,

I am currently living in South Africa and looking to move in with my Dutch Partner in the Netherlands. I understand that I will need to apply for a MVV before the move. I have looked at the requirements and we meet them all.

I am however planning on still working for my South African based company (from the Netherlands) and would need to be in South Africa (and other countries we operate in) relatively often as a result.

Would this impact my eligibility for the MVV as well as the ongoing requirement to keep the MVV for 3 years to ultimately apply for citizenship as well? I see that I am not allowed to be outside of the Netherlands for longer than 6 months (4 month in three consecutive years). Is there a required number of days I would need to physically be in the Netherlands?

Your help will be much appreciated!

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

I don't see the problem; business travel is a fact of life for all of us.  I would advise you to speak to your partner and find out if you can be added to his/her medical insurance in the Netherlands as you will find it very hard with no Dutch income.

MVV is a joint entry/work permit; you might find it easier to apply for a reunification family visa.  As your partner is in the Netherlands, they can speak to IND and get some first-hand advice on what best suits your situation.

The stipulations/requirements to qualify for citizenship are very real; there are no derogations for South African citizens.  If you don't qualify because you have spent too long out of the country, then you won't be applying for citizenship.  The only real difference between long-term residence and a Dutch passport is that the latter gives you the right to vote in Dutch parliamentary elections.  This is one of the deciding factors you have to consider when planning this move; the law may change in the meantime, either for the better, or the worse; it's make your mind up time I guess.

Hope this helps.
