Asking for your NIF on your purchases has benefits for you and for the Portuguese State.

It has benefits for the State, because this is the only way to fight against tax evasion/fraud, which is why it is so important to request for a invoice/payment receipt with your tax number (NIF).

It has benefits for the consumer (you), because asking for an invoice/payment receipt with your NIF will allow you, for example, to deduct expenses in health, education, housing (rental receipts), old people's homes and general family expenses in your yearly IRS declaration. And all this is done automatically. You only need to periodically check your bills here:

https://faturas.portaldasfinancas.gov.pt/home.action

You should choose the option "Consumidor"/ "Consumer".
Then you must enter your NIF and password, which is the same as in the "Portal das Finanças".

If invoices are in the "Pendente"/ "Pending" status, you should check if that invoice/payment receipt is related to any expense regarding any activity sector mentioned above. This assignment is often automatic, but sometimes it is not (when the retailer acts in more than one activity sector).

_____

Each taxpayer can deduct up to 250 euros of general family expenses, and in single-parent families the deduction is increased to 335 euros. These deductions are automatically made by the AT (Portuguese Tax Authority) IT system in your yearly IRS declaration.

But there are more benefits for consumers:
- Having tax benefits, such as a 15% VAT refund / "Reembolso do IVA pago" from each invoice/payment receipt, on expenses with monthly public transport passes, lodging (Hotels, Airbnb, ...), restaurants, car and motorbike repair shops;

- Avoid paying fines, as issuing invoices has been compulsory since 2013 for all transactions of goods and services;

- Be automatically eligible for the public campaign to encourage the issue of invoices, through the "Sorteio da Fatura da sorte" / "Lucky Invoice lottery" .

Find out more about this here:

On the green button "os meus cupões" / "my coupons", you can check your numbers that have been assigned to you (according to your expenses amount), and which enable you to take part automatically in the weekly draw that can range from 35,000 eur to 50,000 eur.

Always request invoices/payment receipts with your NIF!
