Warning about trusting property caretakers

Hello All,

Just wanted to post a message explaining our experience and warn all of you to be careful whom you trust.  We recently bought a house in Sam Ignacio.  We thought our realtor was terrific. Based on our communications with her and then meeting her, she seemed solid.  She told us after the purchase that she managed some properties for other expats.  SHAME on us for not asking for references.  As it turns out, her ulterior motive was to rent our property for a month until we could come down permanently and have us pay for the electric and water! After several WhatsApp conversations which tipped us off, my husband decided to go to Belize and surprise her and her “renter”.  He did indeed.  Threw out the renter and secured our home by changing all the locks on the doors and the locks on the gate, which she had given the renter the keys to.  What an expensive mistake on our part!  Fortunately, her plan was foiled and our home, while dirty, is now secured.  This has left me suspicious of the natives and I just wanted to warn other expats.

CC72 experience is very upsetting, Even "friends" find the temptation difficult to resist. my solution was to have online bills from B E L for the electricity supply.  the consumption history is shown on every invoice.    it is helpful if you have bills for your own occupation to use as a yardstick.in my case cooking was with GAS, which makes  the electricity throughput easier to read.         make sure every one knows you know!!
