Visa Entry for married spouse

Following our marriage (male US citizen and female Vietnamese citizen) in Thailand, how much should a marriage visa (approximate) cost be to re-enter Vietnam? We have been quoted $700 USD. Is this a fair amount for this type of visa or less or more? As well, what will be the expected new conditions allowable for this particular visa, in terms of extended residential duration in VN? Thank you for your thoughtful feedback - Mike

I'm an American, married to VN ...living in DaNang...3 yr TRC (TT) $140.00 USD; takes about a week.  You can also apply for a 5 yr. Exemption Visa...not sure what the cost is on this.  I prefer the 3 yr TRC due to only going to the local police once vs every time you exit/re-enter VN or having to get stamped again every 6 months.  Get a 30 day visa, go to immigrations in VN, apply.  two forms, two photos, marriage cert. (translated and certified VN) should work.  I've had both the TRC and 5 yr...piece of cake here in Danang...

Hell, once you are back in Vietnam, to make things even simpler...re-marry in VN and get  Vietnamese license...Might have a problem with her hometown, depending upon the 'culture'.
It only cost me about 1,000,000 VND to get the paperwork done and a couple weeks.  A couple hundred thousand for a 'shrink test'  :).  I've, never had problems here in DaNang...and nothing under the table or 'coffee money' as they say.

You may want to check with the local VN consulate in Thailand, a few years ago they were refusing to do paperwork for their citizens.

Are they allowing spouses to enter Vietnam now?  I thought the borders were still closed, and family re-unification is not one of the exemptions to the border closure running since March 2020.

"The Vietnamese government has approved the resumption of international flights to and from nine destinations from 1 January 2022."

"From the start of the year, Vietnam will open its air borders to either San Francisco or Los Angeles in the United States, plus a raft of Asian destinations including Singapore, Bangkok, Phnom Penh, Vientiane in Laos, Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Taipei, according to VNExpress."   Several of the resorts in DaNang are booked for TET...so,I'd say the 'gates are open'.  Pending specific Covid requirements for safety.

Yes, open for Vietnamese and their family but not for regular tourists.

"gates are open" not exactly correct- the tourists coming in on tours/resorts have to pay upfront for accom, driver, and can NOT leave the tour to roam where they wish, plus friends etc cant just pop in and see them in their resort, so it's very much a closed gate for them while they are here.

"Tourist" as in come and go where you want when you want, is still not available, the gov has made the directive for spouces, families to come back to VN for TET along with Biz people and "experts"

The next phase is more countries coming in and then lastly tourists not on tours/resorts.

So the "gate" is only partly open as of now.

When directives are posted and filtered down to agents, brokers, lawyers, officials we will post any additional we hear about for tourists to come like 2 years back on 1, 3, 12 month visa's.

I guess all countries are a bit different but in Australia where I married my Vietnamese (citizen) wife, the fee for a 5year visa exemption is $100 AUD plus registered post for your passport. Note that 5 years ago the fee was considerably more, about $150 if memory serves me correctly. The process is seamless. Complete a downloaded form from the consulate website, add a copy of your certified marriage certificate and your passport.  A consulate official telephoned me two days later and we completed the payment over the phone. Easy peasy :)

You have to wonder why it costs a 100 aud when its free in Vietnam.

I’m a little bit confused? Two posts above refer to paying fees in DaNang. I know that strictly speaking it is not a “visa” but a “visa exemption”. However, if I was to take the alternative route I would be paying a similar amount per entry and over 5 years that would equate to around $1000. I’m satisfied to pay the administrative service/tax the same as I have to any other country where I have required a visa. Before I leave VN in July I’ll test your advice and see if I can get a new exemption with an extra five months validity.

The same visa in the US is 50 dollars, so it seems they charge whatever they can get. If you marry in VN you can get a VEC for free or about $10 depending on where you get it done. .

My friend had hers done in Ben Tre for free. As you said, the cost you paid is minimal when you compare it to tourist visas.
