With e-visa being only visa most people can get for VN, wondering if the government is still renewing the 5 year visa when the time comes for me to renew? Still planning to retire in VN after my dog passes away and I still have about 2 years left on my 5 year visa. Appreciate any info.

I presume your visa is due to your Vietnamese family connection, therefore, it shouldnt be a problem.

@colinoscapee Yes, I'm Vietnamese American, born in VN.
Thanks

Please clarify:

Are you talking about a 5 year Visa Exemption Certificate, which is not itself a visa?

The San Francisco consulate of Vietnam (and I assume the other consulates and the embassy) currently is processing 5-year VEC renewals.

I know this for certain because I just "assisted" forum friend Ciambella getting hers renewed as she remains in Vũng Tàu.

@OceanBeach92107 Thanks! Yes, I guess it's the VEC.

Do you not have VN citizenship?  If you don't can't you get it back?  I would have thought you didn't need any visa or VEC since you were born in country.  That said it's only $10 for a five year VEC so the cost isn't high.

Also if you did give up citizenship does that mean you can't buy land?

Here's an interesting previous post by QNBUI giving a bit of his history:

I don't know about today but back in the mid-late 70's, everyone goes to the same prison. Women & children were segregated in a section and men and teens were jailed together. My entire family were caught trying to escape VN and we were all thrown into the same prison. I was about 6 so I was with the girls & women. My brother who was probably over 10 were jailed with the men. These juveniles will probably go to prison with the adults.

@SteinNebraska I don't have any paperwork showing I was born in VN. My parents are gone and we don't have much relatives back in VN. Don't know the street my parent's house was in Saigon or the farm my parents owned so we can lay low while we tried to escape. I tried reaching out to a couple of an agencies including Duong Global but they needed info and also the Vietnamese Consulate in SF needed info also which I cannot provide. We thought we might have the deed to the farm that my parents owned but unfortunately it's lost so no proof of residency. One person I know said they know someone who can get me citizenship in Nha Trang but I don't want to go through that shady route.

I know your father recently passed away, but you've previously mentioned a sister is still living?

It makes me wonder if Vietnam is or ever will be considering DNA test results to prove citizenship?
qnbui
@OceanBeach92107 Yes, my dad passed away right before Covid lock down. I have 2 sisters and they are both in So California with no intention of moving to VN. Hopefully once I move to VN to retire, I will have the time to do more research to come up with some documents to apply for citizenship.

DNA testing seems like a far distant future or not an option for a developing country.
