Tariq 1983 : Has it all gone 'Pete Tong' ?

Post new topic

Lotus Eater

I joined this Forum many years before I became actively involved in the various discussion threads about a year ago. I was a ‘taker’ of information rather than a ‘giver’ to the Expat Forum community. Guilty as charged ‘Mea Culpa’

Since joining in 2010 I have noticed how many ‘Ad Hoc’ participants, as I call them, will post a question regarding a lifestyle issue in the Philippines which many members diligently provide answers to the best of their knowledge. Most of these responses will far outweigh any information provided online through various ‘travel blogs’ You cannot beat the ‘boots on the ground’ advice.

I recalled today a post from pnwcyclist regarding the whereabouts of our friend ‘Tariq 1983’ who was actively involved in this Forum and moved to the Philippines at the end of May this year. I say ‘actively’ in the sense that he was a ‘taker’ of information rather than a ‘giver’ Well of course that’s to be expected given that he had never visited the Philippines before and was starting out on a new venture. A credit to his adventurous zeal given his relative young age compared to most Philippine expats.

Hitherto there has been no update from Tariq to this Forum other than a couple of videos from his Blog entitled ‘The Philippines Dream’ the last of which was several weeks ago.

There can only be four reasons for the above: something serious has happened to the gentleman i.e deceased - perish the thought, in a jail in Angeles his chosen city, the ‘dream’ has all gone ‘Pete Tong’ or he is managing the transition in his adopted country.

I had several doubts about this gentlemans prospects in the country after having read several of his posts. Firstly his ‘naivety’ which to his credit he was trying to address the shortcomings of, through this Forum. I think I can speak for most Forum members by saying we were equally naive at his age. But there were some inconsistencies in his comments also. My main concern was his skin colour - yes I said it. Most members, including myself, were too politically correct to raise this issue. All other things being equal and knowing how Filipinos praise ‘white skin’colour this was always going to be a major but not insurmountable challenge. Unfortunately prejudice is still very much alive in the Philippines as it is worldwide.

If the last two reasons apply then would it not have been a common courtesy to keep the Forum members updated given that he is by definition of his Blog ‘street cred’ when it comes to all things IT?
The above example is not specifically targeted at Tariq because of his colour in case the politically correct ‘thought’ police pick me up on the accusation of prejudice: while at school in the 70’s I was nicknamed ‘the white boy who loves soul (predominantly black) music’

The title of this thread refers to the ‘evolution’ of soul music from the mid eighties and beyond and the 2004 movie a parody of the British (white) DJ Pete Tong.

So Tariq 1983 if ever you do read this thread and god willing you are still alive and kicking perhaps a ‘give back' to the Forum and update on your progress would be overdue.

I was wondering too about how our friend tariq1983 is doing. Since his arrival  at Angeles, he has posted three shorts. The most recent one was a stroll on a street which seems like Angeles' red light district. IMO, it's not a good start in creating a blog where your topic is moving to the Philippines while you're still young and making a living here. And why short format videos? Tariq1983 is very articulate, which is why a regular format video with him explaining  his experience would have been better and gain more interest / viewership. More views means better monetization on YouTube.

Not odd if being overvelmed by things needing to be done in startup.
((I have told when arriving to settle I expect to not have time a while for forums. On top of that in my location it will be even less likely by slow/no internet needing to climb up a hill to get signal, which isnt nice when its raining   :)    I mean before signal have made stronger by equipment, which can take a while.))

Yes, he can have got a shock by how many Filipinos find skinn color important.  Many dont even want to be in sun because of geting darkened skin...
(Although I know of two black Americans one with Filipina wife brought to USA rather recently in an odd relation I believe becoming a train wreck soon, an other living in Phils with Filipina girlfriend since recently. They arent among the brightest concerning anything though  :)  so its possible they are targets for taking money from them.)

Some people are selfish though. He has had time to make and post videos...

Not I. I were born as old wice   :)
((When I were 10yo I talked as a lawyer  1f923.svg and I started organising socker matches between school classes when I were 7. And when I were playing coach in handball as 13yo I thought about tactics the others not even thought of thinking about   :)   as one of the players in that team said recently =He with a mango farm north of Manila I have mensioned some times.))

I now remembered the name EPTOWING who was active on this forum. . . .What I remember he was coming here for three months  and traveling with his Labrador dog. If I recall he was thinking of buying a small hotel or maybe a boarding house.

Any News?
Lotus Eater
No news. Like our friend Tariq 1983 - missing in action. Just a thought but perhaps we ought to put out (as our American friends say) an APB?

I have just been looking at some old posts and subjects on here and Eptowing was the guy who went to see one of his girls in Cagayan De Oro for a couple of weeks before visiting other islands to do some scuba diving. The Post was - Leaving Tomorrow and he said he was aiming to be in the Philippines for 64 days, travelling around and diving. He did get to Cagayan De Oro because he sent an update on the thread dated 3 May and another one on 15 May. Not sure he was the guy with the dog though.

Not sure about Tariq 1983 although I guess there may be members living near Angeles who he has messaged privately and maybe arranged to meet up for a coffee or beer. I sent him a private message today though just asking if he was ok (Probably a long shot hoping for a reply if he has not given us an update on his progress on the forum, but I just thought I would try).

Fiji water ran a commercial saying "The label says Fiji because it's not bottled in Cleveland Ohio".

The Cleveland Water Department ran tests. Fiji water contained 6.31 microns of arsenic per litre, while Cleveland Municipal water contained none.

The cost of water in Cleveland is 1.6 cents per gallon.

What concerns me is that Tariq 1983’s blog has not been updated for some time. As I understand it this was going to be his main revenue stream along with other IT associated work.

His chosen destination city, Angeles ,is not the wisest of choices for a first timer to the Philippines. The mind boggles with various scenarios given his ‘radio silence’

Its possible that he has hooked up unbeknown with a Filipina bargirl whose speciality is Dominatrix work. While chained up in her dungeon she presented him with a, ahem, large invoice that he was unable to pay because he left his credit card at home (remember the Amex commercial ‘Don’t leave home without it’ ?)

Perhaps this is a case for Harry Bosch?
Cherryann01

@Lotus Eater Love them Harry Bosch books. I don't think there is much point putting out an APB though, most American Police are depicted has being addicted to food. Our Cops  in the UK do surveillance, they go for a Steak Out, we have a problem and they have a beef. I think they are addicted to cows.

Certainly does the Forum credit that members have concerns.

Maybe a relevant Embassy should be informed of the situation?

I do believe (and I hope I am right) that, of the four reasons you mentioned, the reason why there hasn't been any update from Tariq is because he is managing the transition in his adopted country. He did mention that his income will come from multiple sources, and that he was considering taking TESOL / TEFL and Google courses. So perhaps he's busy and trying to focus on how to get the money he needs. But, even so, if one of his income sources is monetization of his Youtube channel, it would be to his benefit to post what he's doing to get more views and subscribers. (You need first 4,000 hours watched and 1,000 subscribers within 12 months to get your channel monetized.) Even if he just posted quick videos of himself studying / reviewing / strolling, two to three times a week, would be good for his channel.

I'm not that concerned about safety. He grew up in Brooklyn. Thus, he knows better to avoid dangerous situations. And besides, he has a relative - a cousin, I think - in Angeles.
pnwcyclist
I'm sure he's okay and probably just having fun, but got concerned when he mentioned partying with someone who posted on his last video post. Lot's of bad things can happen in that scenario, especially if out late and drinking. I hope he has the sense to moderate that a bit.
Lotus Eater
Perhaps it was the Dominatrix who he was partying with? 1f60e.svg

So just had a reply from Tariq to my message, asking if he was okay and telling him we were worried about him. He says he is doing quite well and is sorry for not keeping in contact but intends to post something today.

"Managing his transition...." If he was last seen on Walking Street and has not been heard from, he is probably reveling in the buffet of beauties there and is too busy with the girls to do much else. Maybe one even got him to try her drugs...

BTW, I don't see a lot of prejudice against black people here in Angeles. There are a lot of black guys, and they don't seem to have any trouble getting girls. Of course, that's only one visible test; I have no idea whether there's prejudice in other areas.

Tariq has shown up in an other topic    :)

Well. Its rather common Filipinos even lock down at darker skinned FILIPINOS,
and many Filipinos treat not dark skinned tribe people very bad too even scamming them "because" they are tribe  1f621.svg
But in Angeles I guess most girls find foreigners - expected to have biger wallets - interesting undepending of skin color. And he is rather young compared to many other foreigners, which can speak to his advantage.
