Mauritius gains sovereignty over Chagos Islands

The UK has agreed to return sovereignty over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius after more than five decades. This decision follows a prolonged diplomatic dispute, with the British government planning to retain its military base on Diego Garcia, which is strategically important. The handover is expected to occur within months, marking the end of colonial control over this Indian Ocean territory. Unemployment sees slight decline in Q2

Mauritius' unemployment rate dipped from 6.4% to 6.2% in the second quarter of 2024, with 3,500 jobs added. However, women (8.5%) and youth (17.8%) remain disproportionately affected. Statistics Mauritius highlights that 48% of the unemployed do not hold a School Certificate, while 13,100 young people were jobless during this period.
