This week, Mauritius has witnessed several significant developments: a prospective decrease in petrol prices, the inauguration of a biogas facility in Beau Bassin, ongoing demolition works at Ruisseau du Pouce to mitigate flood risks, and the international acclaim of Mauritian photographer Joël Capillaire, a finalist in the HUAWEI XMAGE Awards 2024.
Commerce Minister announces imminent petrol price reduction
On Monday, 25 November 2024, newly appointed Commerce Minister Michael Sik Yuen revealed that his ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, is working towards reducing fuel prices—a measure eagerly awaited by the populace, expected to take effect by Saturday.
In his inaugural official statement since assuming office, the minister also mentioned the potential removal of VAT on certain staple goods, a proposal to be deliberated in conjunction with the Ministry of Finance.
"We have made promises, and we will do everything to fulfill our commitments," he asserted, underscoring the government's resolve to alleviate economic pressures on households.
Biogas plant inaugurated at Beau Bassin prison
On Wednesday, 27 November 2024, a biogas plant was officially inaugurated within the New Wing prison in Beau Bassin. This ambitious project, spearheaded by the Ministry of Environment, aims to modernize the Mauritius Prison Service's infrastructure while embracing sustainable solutions for organic waste management.
During the event, Environment Minister Rajesh Bhagwan hailed this initiative as a "tangible example of the government's efforts to reduce Mauritius's carbon footprint and promote eco-friendly and cost-effective solutions." This project signifies a pivotal step towards energy recovery from waste and the advancement of a circular economy.
Progress in demolition works at Ruisseau du Pouce to alleviate flood risks
Demolition activities at Ruisseau du Pouce are advancing swiftly, with 60% of structures near the Jardin de la Compagnie—formerly occupied by a fair—already dismantled. Notably, the KFC building has been entirely razed, bringing the overall progress to 80%.
The Port Louis municipality has also resolved to dismantle the Rogers parking facility constructed over the stream. A tender is scheduled for 3 December, aiming to demolish concrete slabs and other structures obstructing the natural flow of rainwater. These impediments have exacerbated flood risks in this vulnerable urban area.
