Follow Expat.com to Beau-Bassin this week as we get you acquainted with the Balfour Garden, a small garden, a little haven of peace and calm very much appreciated by the locals. The garden is a place to recharge, get away from it all, or spend some quiet time with your family only a few minutes away from Beau-Bassin's city center.
Balfour Garden appeals to everyone. Named after Sir Andrew Balfour, a Scottish physician specializing in tropical medicine who wrote a report on sanitary conditions on the island in 1900, it was inaugurated in 1950 and has since welcomed many visitors.
This garden is home to large green spaces with age-old trees, palm trees and endemic plants. But not only. Families also come here for its playgrounds for children - slides, swings, trains. The garden also appeals to bigger children at heart.
Picturesque landscapes
The Balfour Garden is also home to the Aldabra Turtle Park. From the garden you can admire landscapes worthy of postcards. Indeed, the garden overlooks the Great North-West River and the view of the Balfour waterfall is worth the detour.
The sound of the waterfalls and the stream that runs through the garden will help you disconnect from your daily routine. If you want to get away and take a deep breath, this is the place to be. In fact, this area is a favorite among visitors.
At the top of the cliffs, stands the Thabor. A magnificent building, known as a place of retreat.
A true haven of peace, the Balfour Garden is open from 5 am to 8 pm.
