News at a glance: Diwali Festival celebrations

Mauritius will be illuminated this weekend. Indeed, the celebrations for the Diwali Festival start tomorrow in various regions of the island. Also in the news, more than 800 cases of gastroenteritis in just a week.

Diwali Festival: Several events on the agenda

Let the Diwali celebrations begin. The actual Diwali night will take place on Monday, October 24. However, various events are planned throughout the island on the occasion of the Festival of Light during the weekend. 

The Caudan Waterfront is planning a series of activities on October 21 and 22. A musical interlude will be held this Friday from noon to 2pm. Not to mention a bake sale from 9 am to 6 pm. The next day, Mahatma Gandhi Institute students will be on stage for a dance performance from 1:30 to 3 p.m. The bake sale will continue all day.

There will also be a concert at Goodlands with a host of local artists. The Indira Gandhi Centre for Indian Culture High Commission of India (IGCIC) is organizing the "Festival of Lights" with a cultural performance at the IGCIC Auditorium in Phoenix at 6 p.m. free and open to the public. The So'Flo shopping center is holding a Diwali lamp decorating event for children on Saturday, October 22 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Champ de Mars will also vibrate for the Festival of Light. The People's Turf Plc, organizer of horse races, will celebrate the Diwali Festival on Sunday, October 23. The program will include a dance show and various activities. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.

Gastroenteritis: cases up in just one week

Take precautions. Gastroenteritis cases are on the rise in the country. 875. That's the number of people who contracted gastroenteritis from Oct. 10 to 16. These figures were obtained from regional hospitals and published by the Ministry of Health on Wednesday. 

This is mainly caused by the change in temperature with the return of summer. Bacteria grow quickly in the heat. Caution is advised when consuming foods such as meat, milk or seafood.
