News at a glance: Reservoir fill rate below 40

Summer rains are overdue. The average reservoir fill rate has dropped to less than 40%. Also in the news, almost 900,000 tourists have visited the country this year.

Water distribution: tank filling rate at 39%

The situation is increasingly worrying. The filling rate is now at 39.6% and the summer rains are overdue. The authorities, who are following this situation very closely, should come up with new measures to avoid any waste and also to alter the water distribution schedule.

If the situation does not improve and the fill rate continues to drop, the Water Resources Monitoring Committee, which includes the Department of Energy, CWA, WRU, Irrigation Auhtority and the Vacoas Weather Station, will have to make other "major" decisions to better manage the available water resources. "Even more drastic measures will be taken if the need arises. Everything will depend on the evolution of the situation," we learn.

Added to this, the underground water sources are also in a critical state. To cope with this drought, several measures have been taken. The authorities are trying to exploit waterways with mobile treatment stations. They are also trying to find new groundwater. Water sources have been made available in Albion, Beau-Champ, Valriche, Solitude and Creve Coeur, among others. Water trucks are also supplying water to several regions of the island until very late at night.

Another consequence of the drought is the perpetual increase in the price of vegetables.
