This week in Mauritius, there's a mix of events making headlines. People are getting anxious due to fraudulent phone calls, the latest electoral lists have been unveiled, and there's a new Conforama store up and running in Bagatelle.

Questionable Calls: Mauritius Telecom's cautionary note

Mauritius Telecom users are buzzing with reports of strange phone calls originating from foreign lands, easily recognizable by their unique country codes. The source seems to be mainly African countries, with Ghana taking the lead. Mauritius Telecom, acknowledging the issue, has dealt with a limited number of complaints about these international calls. In response, the company has taken action to block these dubious numbers. They're advising everyone to be cautious, suggesting to dodge these calls and put the kibosh on any suspicious numbers that pop up on their mobiles.

Fresh Electoral Lists: A diversity snapshot

The updated electoral roll was rolled out this Wednesday. The official data disclosed by the Electoral Commission of Mauritius shows that a whopping 991,327 individuals have registered, a jump from the 941,719 recorded during the last election in 2019.

Detailed demographic insights underline the Mauritian electorate's diversity. Youngsters are showing up in numbers, and involvement increases with age. Around 9.842% of voters fall in the 19 to 24 age bracket, 9.096% are aged 25 to 29, and 18.251% sit between 30 and 39. The trend continues, with 35.852% of voters ranging from 40 to 59 years old, and 25.625% falling in the 60 to 99 age group.

Gender balance stands out, with women at 51% and men at 49%, underscoring women's pivotal role in Mauritian democracy. When it comes to constituencies, Constituency No. 5 – including Pamplemousses and Triolet – boasts the highest number of registered voters. Close contenders are Constituencies No. 14 (Savanne/Rivière-Noire) and No. 15 (La Caverne/Phoenix).

Constituency count: Most popular voting zones

Among the constituencies, Constituency No. 5, covering Pamplemousses and Triolet, claims the title of having the largest voter turnout, amassing 70,269 enthusiastic voters. Constituency No. 14, Savanne/Rivière Noire, follows suit with 67,700 voters, and Constituency No. 15, La Caverne/Phoenix, trails closely with 60,400 voters.

Conforama's arrival in Bagatelle

Mauritius witnesses the dawn of its first-ever Conforama store in Bagatelle. After being operational for a few weeks, the store already showcases a wide array of products.

Conforama, a brand specializing in home essentials, furnishings, and decor, has launched its Mauritian venture. With a sprawling network of 173 stores across Europe, this chain offers an impressive collection of items ranging from indoor and outdoor furniture to household appliances, bedding, and decorations.

This unique store concept began taking shape in 2017 during entrepreneurial discussions about products that could captivate Mauritian consumers. The aim was clear: deliver a shopping experience blending quality, style, and affordability, giving birth to the furnishings-focused idea.
