MAMA JAZ, this year's edition will be the ninth. Looking back, how has the festival evolved?
It all started with an idea that began to take shape during a conversation with Jerry Léonide towards the end of 2015. We bounced it around among friends and close collaborators until we had a solid plan and carried out our first week-long project in April 2016. From there, fueled by optimism and creativity, we proposed a month-long format for April, and the 2017 edition turned out to be the most challenging yet rewarding. In 2018, we took steps towards more efficient development, focusing on teams, communication, and the production cycle, which led to a significant impact nationwide in 2019. Collaborations with television, radio, and most of all internet characterized the 2020 and 2021 COVID editions. In 2022, we had to adapt to new circumstances, evolving our professional practices alongside those of our audiences. Finally, in 2023, we found reassurance, and the adventure continues.
What are some of the must-see artists for the 2024 edition of MAMA JAZ?
Choosing a favorite artist from the festival is tough because each one brings their own unique magic and authenticity to the stage. However, it's crucial to consider the diverse experiences available. For purists and seasoned concert-goers, the big indoor shows are a must. At the same time, outdoor picnics are perfect for groups or families who simply love music and a relaxed atmosphere. And for the intellectually curious or those with an anthropological bent, the diverse selection of online performances, the Minit Mazik, offers some real gems worth exploring.
What collaborations and anecdotes stand out as the most memorable for you?
There have been nine editions. To get here, we've been through a lot and we've learned to savor it!
How do you see jazz fitting into the local music scene?
I believe jazz holds significant influence here as a genre and a school of musical thought; it's something musicians and music lovers can't go without.
Why is discovering Mauritian jazz so essential?
On one hand, it's vital to celebrate the natural creativity of Mauritians, while on the other hand, remaining open to all genres of music, including jazz. However, it's absolutely crucial to delve into MAMA JAZ, which aims to foster original musical creation and unearth hidden gems.
What are the main jazz genres that are popular in Mauritius?
In reality, what MAMA JAZ offers has a wide appeal and often incorporates elements of folklore. For example, the music of Philippe Thomas, Patrick Desvaux, and Belingo Faro embodies popular jazz in Mauritius. Otherwise, I feel that different generations are drawn to what they find accessible and enjoyable, without strict categorization; whether it's swing, bebop, acid, segaz, and so forth.
How do you advertise jazz concerts in Mauritius, and who is the target audience? Is there a notable enthusiasm for it?
Initially, my strategy was to actively seek and cultivate audiences, a direction that evolved with MAMA JAZ from 2016 onwards to connect with a broader spectrum of listeners. This involved both catering to existing jazz enthusiasts and introducing newcomers to the joys of the genre. The growing turnout at our main concerts and picnics shows the enthusiasm, as does the diverse audience reached through various media platforms. What's particularly rewarding for us is the ability to reach people from all walks of life.
What are your thoughts on the future of jazz in Mauritius, and what are your plans to contribute to it?
MAMA JAZ is a month-long festival that celebrates creative music and jazz, with a focus on showcasing Mauritian talent. I firmly believe that, together with the artists, audiences, partners, and collaborators, we are all contributing to shaping a promising future.
Do you receive support from local partners or collaborators?
The festival wouldn't exist without friends, family, artists, audiences, producers, media, private sector partners and government support.
