Stockholm is one of the fastest-growing cities in Europe and with a population of over 1 million, housing options are increasingly limited. Not only is the market more competitive, but the prices have shot up over the years.

Stockholm's housing market
Stockholm uses a rent-control system called the 'försthandskontrakt', or first-hand contract. Although the system is supposed to keep rental prices affordable, there is a short supply of these accommodation options and waiting lists to find a first-hand rental contract can span several years or even decades.
Due to this system, many renters (both locals and expats) use second-hand contracts, which are basically subleasing agreements where people with first-hand rental contracts sublet the apartment.
First-hand rental contracts may be easier to find in the suburbs and residential areas since housing options are more and demand is generally lower. If you're having trouble finding even a second-hand agreement, consider short-term options or even purchasing a property.
Budget
Rental prices are undoubtedly high. If you are deadest on living in the centre of the city, expect to spend as much as 50% of your salary on rent. Studio apartments and one-two room options are quite expensive, while shared housing options are much more reasonable.
Larger housing options for families anywhere within the city are nothing less of expensive, although suburban areas with more residential neighbourhoods cost less for more space.
Remember to include additional fees when you work out a budget. Some questions to ask before signing a contract:

How to find accommodation
Before you start your search, take some time to understand the different neighbourhoods of Stockholm. Once you've decided on a few potential areas, it's time to start your search.
Asking colleagues or friends for suggestions is a good place to start. There are some Facebook groups like Stockholm Rooms for Rent where apartments are advertised, and then, of course, there are online search sites.
