Do the ATM's in San Pedro take US debit cards? If they don't how do you manage your money issues if you are there for long periods of time?

We will be flying from Dallas and have heard many people say it's much cheaper to fly into cancun, then bus to chetmul, then boat to San Pedro? Not sure about taking a bus from cancun to chetmul. Has anyone done that ?
