Your best culinary memory in Indonesia

Post new topic

Mickael

Hello everyone,

As you know, every country has its own flavours and tasting the local cuisine is a great way to discover the culture of a destination. Whether it's a small typical restaurant to taste local dishes, a traditional meal in a local's home, street food or fast food, there is something for everyone!

So, which dish do you want to try in Indonesia?
Which dish has impressed you the most and when did you discover it?
Do you know how to cook it and share it with your family?

Thank you for your taste contribution ;)

Mie oncluk from Wonosobo Jawa Tengah

I very strongly recommend this stuff. There is an especially nice restaurant to the south of the city on the road to Purwokerto.

directoratthenumberschef

@Cheryl Yes, I have tried to make it myself but I cannot get the right taste for the sauce. 1f600.svg1f600.svg

So for RP8,000, I can buy a bowl of mie oncluk and three sate sapi. Good deal.

directoratthenumberschef

@Fred Do you remember the name of that restaurant?

We eat Indonesian food almost every day including home made, street food, warung food and restaurants. Our favourites are Nasi Padang (rendang, gulai telor, dendeng balado, terong balado, ayam bakar and so on. We also love Sundanese food which is a lot more healthy than Padang food. I also love lontong sayur/lontong kari, soto daging and soto betawi.

Foods I will not eat here are kikil sapi, intestine sate and most offal dishes.

Fred

On the subject of foods not to eat, put cow brain at the the top.

On the ones to try as soon as you get the chance - Rendang is the top of the list

directoratthenumberschef

@Fred I agree

For those unsure what Rendang is - Imagine heaven living in your mouth, double it, and add a large does of absolute pleasure.

Indonesia is alive with food that hits 11 out of 10 for amazing tastes, but Rendang gets 20.

Fred

One  thing new arrivals in Indonesia MUST try is street food.

These little places vary in every possible way (including cleanliness and quality), but the good ones are stunning.

Everything from fried banana to fried rice and everything between can be had, but some really have to be visited as soon as humanly possible.

I like spicy so nasi gila (Crazy rice) was high on my list, but others might just like to start with goringan (fried things - you pick and choose what you fancy). My favourites are banana and tempe.

directoratthenumberschef

@martinaston906 I agree. Sometimes, it can have a strong flavour, so I add coconut milk to make it not as strong.

directoratthenumberschef

@Fred Street food is awesome. One of my favourite street food is Gudeg. Gudeg is a traditional Javanese dish from Yogyakarta and Central Java, Indonesia. Gudeg is made from young unripe jack fruit stewed for several hours with palm sugar, and coconut milk. You can have it with chicken (ayam).

@directoratthenumberschef

a full-bodied taste appears during long cooking over high heat.  Coconut milk is a very good solution, and I love coconut milk linked sauce...Have you ever tried a square of dark chocolate, at the end of cooking in your rendang?

hasibreza

My favorite Mie Aceh ( Aceh noodles) and Bebek Gulai (duck curry) from Aceh, Sate Marangi- I had my best sate in Cirebon, and overall lontong, Nasi Uduk, Rendang and Sop Sumsum. Yummy.... :)

directoratthenumberschef

@martinaston906 Hello sir. Yes dark chocolate and marshmallow go well after rendang. Cheers, Peter

I do not know if it is popular throughout Indonesia, but sate kelinchi (rabbit).
