Great University towns?

Post new topic

The university system may be a bit different than what some expect in their home country. I am wondering about university towns or districts and whether or to what extent they affect the surrounding areas.

For example, Silliman is fairly respectable. Does it have a positive influence on Dumaguete, or is it isolated like an island? Or De Lasalle in Manila?

And what I mean is there more culture, arts, music, interesting food choices, etc.

The only university town I know besides Cebu City is Dumaguete, which has several universities besides Silliman, along with the preparatory schools being generally more numerous and of higher quality. The result is a relatively safe and clean city  (it is known as the city of gentle people)  which has a pretty good variety of businesses, restaurants and activities. I would say the universities have something to do with that since there are a lot of educated people which tends to reduce poverty and family size as well as create more economic opportunities.

When I was in Dumaguete recently I met up with my neighbours nephew. His aunt gave me a package to deliver to him - a special calculator/notebook for his electronic engineering studies at the Foundation University. My neighbour is funding his university tuition but could not afford the fees at Silliman. In fact the hotel I was staying at, the Coco Grande on Hibbard Avenue is about 100 metres from there which I passed walking to the Boulevard. On the afternoon I arrived I walked out of the hotel took the third turning left into San Jose rd and walking nonchalantly passed a café, looked up and it was Ground Zero! lol.

Mark the nephew is a charming bright 21 year old,  so when I returned from Siquijor to Dumaguete the following week I treated him to breakfast at GZ which he really appreciated. Ironically when I asked him what his plans were after graduating he said he wished to work abroad and would not mind doing any kind of menial work - he just wanted to work abroad. Mmmm that is something that I shall not be relaying to his aunt..
