Are New Year celebrations different when you live abroad?

Post new topic

Ameerah Arjanee

I am a content writer for Expat Magazine, and we are looking to write an article about how the experience of celebrating New Year is different for you in a foreign country as compared to your home country.  Do you feel it's a more grandiose day or a more normal day in some countries? What New Year traditions have surprised you in your country of expatriation? We would greatly appreciate any testimonies, and we wish you all a happy holiday decision.

I come from Estonia and live in Finland. In Estonia it is much more bigger event. In Estonia people celebrate through whole new year night. In Finland , the new year is not such big deal. In Finland people start shooting rockets at 6p.m and by 2 a.m majority is sleeping. Except those who go to the club of course. In Estonia ,rocket shooting starts at 11 p.m and people celebrate the whole night. As well the food selection/ catering is much more richer and more options in Estonian household. When is Finland its is sausage, chips/ crisps and potato salad.

@Ameerah Arjanee In Russia the new year celebration is different from Europe, as kids receive their gifts on New Year, not Christmas. New Year in Russia is very grand.

In Thailand.

The Royal Princess Chiang Mai was the place

to be to ring in Y2K .. especially with the

annual release of Thai-style balloons from

the rooftop celebration zone .. sending scores

of the colored balloons high into the

Chiang Mai sky above the center-city hotel.
