Mauritian woman marrying a UK resident

Hello, I am a mauritian woman. My fiancé is a UK resident (but polish national). We are getting married in Mauritius and among the documents needed by the civil registrar office, there is "Certificate of character/morality (Original) from country of residence and issued by the police authorities (issued within the last six (6) months)".

There is no document called Certificate of character or morality in the UK. But they do have different types of criminal record check documents (ACRO, DBS, Enhanced disclosure, etc...)

Initially I thought the ACRO Police certifcate would work but on the ACRO website they say it is a Police certificate used for immigration purposes in a foreign country. But my fiancé is not immigrating to Mauritius.

DBS is generally for use in the UK for employment purposes.

I am trying to call the Civil Registrar Office in Mauritius to know which document would be receivable but they do not answer the phone.

Anyone here can help perhaps ?

Thank you in advance.

Go to the Marriage Visa section located on the Mezzanine floor in the Passport & Immigration office in Port Louis. You can meet with a Visa officer to get a definitive answer. You may have to wait for about an hour. It's first come first served.

@Chandradeep Hello and thank you for your response. But we already know what he needs for the wedding visa entry. My post is not about the wedding visa requirements. It is for the marriage application itself, which is not a matter of the Passport and Immigration Office but the Civil Registrar Office.

My question is about one document they ask to be able to apply for marriage with a non-citizen of Mauritius.

Hello Anna,

Try posting your question on the England forum as well. Maybe members on that forum might know what document you'll need.

Hi Anna

We were asked to get the same document when we came to Mauritius. It was a few years ago.

The Mauritian authorities are looking to exclude people with serious criminal records.

Get the DBS or the other one, whichever is more comprehensive. In the UK you apply on line and there is a fee ( not cheap!).

Good luck.

Good question. As you say, there is no 'certificate of character' in the UK. Perhaps apply for both the available ones. At least you will save some time.

I managed to get information from the Mauritian Civil Registrar. They told me the ACRO one is fine. It is issued by police authorities and states if the person has any criminal record. Even if this document is generally issued for immigration purposes abroad, they told me it's fine for them.

Thanks everyone.

DBS check will suffice. It’s done online, and very easy. I think it costs about £40 GBP .
