Hi, is there a step-by-step guide for moving to Spain? Is the first step looking for an immigration lawyer to guide you or you can do the process yourself? Thanks.

@fredrouzpay

Dont hire a lawyer just hire a Gestoria, an agent who does all the work for you online and it is quick and inexpensive (around 90 per transaction)

It's definitely easier to have an immigration attorney (or gestor) to help you with your applications. And I wouldn't expect it to be massively expensive.

But there's nothing terribly complicated about it, so you can (if you're motivated, and can follow instructions) do it all yourself. Lots of folks do handle it all themselves, especially for the NLV (No Lucrativa Visa) which is a very common one for American retirees (or anyone who is "financially independent", not necessarily retired).

I did my Spanish residence (and that of my partner) all on my lonesome. But I did kinda wish a couple of times that I'd paid for a translator to go with me to the immigration office. :-)

Spain is pretty good internet-wise. They have a portal with all the information for all the visa/residence options. Some require you to submit at your local Spanish Embassy, and others require you to apply at your local immigration office in Spain (and there's an online booking system to get your appointment).

Spain's a very popular country to relocate to, so aside from the official Spanish government info, there are loads of websites with extra guidance (or names of immigration attorneys).

The Portal de Inmigracion (you'll need to use a browser with automatic translation) is here:

https://extranjeros.inclusion.gob.es/es … index.html

This is the page for all options for non-EU citizens (including Americans):

https://extranjeros.inclusion.gob.es/es … index.html

And this is for the NLV in case you have passive income (i.e. dividends, rent, pensions, royalties):
